Product Description
The art of tattooing has been found all over the world, from the Ice Age to our own day. And though aboriginal people from Arabia to America to the South Seas have traditionally practiced it, tattooing has lately been on the decline among tribal cultures – even as it has become fashionable in the first world. This book showcases the rich variety and sometimes surprising similarities of these disappearing tribal tattoo designs, both representative and abstract, employed as religious symbols, talismans, charms, indicators of status or position, or simply as adornment.

Let's get tribal

I thoughly enjoyed this book, as it contains numerous serious tribal body art designs. My only quibble is that the illustrat- ions and pages were very small, and it was sometimes hard to pick out the designs, especially on the Scythians. If only it were larger in pagination, and illustration!

Is a picture really worth a thousand words?

This is an amazing compilation of tribal tattoos from around the world and throughout time. True to its name it features tribal designs, not the neo-tribal tattoos that have come popular today. I found the pictures to be great as I was looking to find out more about tribal designs from many cultures. I was served well with pictures, but not so well with explanations of what the tattoo was, what it meant, which class would wear it in society, how it was applied, the history behind the tradition, etc. I am using the book as a reference and find that it only becomes great with supporting articles. I had done extensive reading on tribal traditions from around the world and found that this book served well as a companion to these and other articles, but not as a stand alone book. Without the history behind the pictures, you loose the whole meaning. I strongly recommed this book, be it as a source book or simply for a tattoo enthusiaste. However, I would urge everyone to supplement this book with further readings on the matter.

An Excellent Cross-Cultural Reference of Tattoos

This is an excellent book for those looking for indigenous art and original "root" design. It addresses body art from a large spectrum of social groups and all continents. The illustrations are very clear and detailed, and it is well organized to allow you to follow the evolution of a design as it jumps from country to country, culture to culture. I would recommend it for anyone who wants to find a particular tattoo design, either for personal use or simple research.

An Academic Look at Tribal Tattooing
Rating (5)

Maarten Hesselt van Dinter's "Tribal Tattoo Designs" focuses on the cross-cultural history of tattooing, tattooing technology, and commonly expressed motifs. Also examined are societies where tattooing holds a powerful impact in recent history, where and how this custom is practiced, and its significance as a form of human transition and metamorphosis. Extensive research is given to tribal designs, which often were abstract images based on local objects encountered in the environment, such as animals and landmarks. The artwork in "Tribal Tattoo Designs" is extensively detailed, of an academic nature, and should be on the bookshelf of all anthropologists.

Product Description
Type and Image The Language of Graphic Design Philip B. Meggs What is the essence of graphic design? How do graphic designers solve problems, organize space, and imbue their work with those visual and symbolic qualities that enable it to convey visual and verbal information with expression and clarity? The extraordinary flowering of graphic design in our time, as a potent means for communication and a major component of our visual culture, increases the need for designers, clients, and students to comprehend its nature. In this lively and lavishly illustrated book, the author reveals the very essence of graphic design. The elements that combine to form a design-- sings, symbols, words, pictures, and supporting forms--are analyzed and explained. Graphic design's ability to function as language, and the innovative ways that designers combine words and pictures, are discussed. While all visual arts share common spatial properties, the author demonstrates that graphic space has unique characteristics that are determined by its communicative function. Graphic designs can have visual and symbolic properties which empower them to communicate with deep expression and meaning. The author defines this property as graphic resonance and explains how it occurs. After defining design as a problem-solving process, a model for this process is developed and illustrated by an in-depth analysis of actual case histories. This book will provide insight and inspiration for everyone who is interested or involved in graphic communications. While most materials about form and meaning in design have a European origin, this volume is based on the dynamic and expressive graphic design of America. The reader will find inspiration, hundreds of exciting examples by many of America's outstanding graphic designers, and keen insights in Type and Image.

Although this text is a vital first step in design education, it falls short for an experienced designer; basic juxtaposition, etc. Get it out of a library and spend your money on any of the Looking Closer series by Michael Beirut... they will infinitely expand your perceptions of what design is and explores contemporary issues facing designers today.

Just not enough content
Rating (2)
Date: 2002-02-03
1 out of 7 customers found this reveiw helpful
Just not enough content pretty much sums it up for me. Half the book was pictures, which were supposed to emphasize the techniques, but I found many to be unappealing. The overall material explaining the author's ideas of design criteria could have been presented in about ten pages.

12 years in the trade and I refer to this book frequently

The cover of this book could have employed design basics to get creative results, but the interior makes up for it. Its generous amount of fundmental information is nicely laid out in an uncomplicated and easy to use format. Mostly, I am disappointed with graphic design how-to books. They tend to be ambiguously narrated "portfolios" of high-profile designers with magnificant clients; as if just staring at their work is going to make you a better designer with a bigger budget. Though the majority of these samples are grand, Perterson actually analyses why the designs chosen are successful based on design fundamentals. The first half of the book is honest and humble -- like kindergarten; but in a really nice classroom. The topics discussed in depth are the basics of design like line, type, shape, texture, balance, contrast, unity, color, and value. The second half graduates to the working world and how those philosophies are applied to working models. A must for every designer. I have been doing this for twelve years and I still refer to the first half of this book all the time.

I was really impressed with the fact the author wrote the book with "design novices" in mind. The book was an easy read, but yet pushed the reader to think beyond the examples laid out in the book

A Dream Realized
Rating (5)
Date: 2003-04-08
14 out of 14 customers found this reveiw helpful
This is the most magnificent book of photography that I have seen in many a year. Of course, at this writing, "Vanishing Africa" is more than two decades old, but I had never even heard of it until I chanced to watch a documentary entitled "The Wonderful, Horrible Life of Leni Riefenstahl" on Sundance. The film contains many a revelation about its fascinating subject, but none so remarkable as Riefenstahl's reincarnation, in the 1950s, as a nature photographer. Banned, for all practical purposes, from making films, she turned her visual sense to advantage by traveling to the Sudan, where she spent twenty years photographing the Nubians and other endangered African peoples. The images that result are every bit as striking and provocative as anything in "Triumph of the Will" or "Olympia." Of equal interest is the introduction that Riefenstahl has provided for the book; her adventures in Africa were not confined to those behind the camera! Fortunately, I am lucky enough to have a friend who possesses this rare and expensive book; I now want very badly to see the underwater film that Riefenstahl, who took up scuba diving in her 70s, completed last year, the same year she marked her centenary.
