This is Not the Diary of St. Faustina - this is Part of the Diary

As this book states, it is the sayings of Jesus FROM the Diary of St. Faustina - but it is NOT the diary.

The diary itself is the story, as a diary would be, of St. Faustina's life and her interactions with Jesus and His messages throughout her life.

The sayings alone, without knowing the content of what was happening at the time of each saying, can easily make it seem like something totally different then when you combine the whole picture of what had and was happening when Jesus spoke each quote to Faustina.
(it is the same as only getting one side of the conversation, very disjointed and out of contest).

That said, if one knows the whole story and has read Faustina's diary, then this is a nice book just to be able to have the actual sayings of Jesus to St. Faustina in one compact and easily to review book.

The complete Diary:

Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska - in Burgundy Leather: Divine Mercy in My Soul

Diary of Saint Maria Faustina Kowalska (Mass market version): Divine Mercy in My Soul

Diary of St. Maria Faustina Kowalska (Polish Version)

Very well written, easy and fast paced story of St. Faustina's life:
Faustina: Apostle of Divine Mercy

Another book that sorts out parts of the Diary:
Revelations of Divine Mercy: Daily Readings from the Diary of Blessed Faustina Kowalska

Everyone Should Read This Diary!

The many excellent reviews that have been written about St. Faustina's Diary are correct! I have been reading this for Lent and it is a fascinating book that can be read over and over much like the Bible. Someone once told me this book is really deep; please don't think this book is too deep for you, it's not.

Page after page reaffirms God's great mercy. Reading the words that Jesus actually spoke to St. Faustina is so moving. You will want to meditate upon them. I find it is a great book to take with me to Eucharistic Adoration.

So, if you only have a couple of Catholic books in your home, this should be one of them.

Buy the book and study it.

I found this book to be a wonderful aid to my spiritual life. At one point in the book Jesus tells Sister Faustina to write in her diary because it will be helpful to souls who would read it later.
I am one of those souls. At times I felt as if Christ was speaking to me through her. This book helped me so much to understand more fully how vast is the love of God. So vast that none of us will ever be able to understand it. Much larger than the worst sins that any of us can ever commit.
This book made me more aware of my own sin on another level than what I was previously aware of. This book has taught me new forms of prayer that have helped draw me closer to Christ.
This book has taught me more about how to love God. It has greatly enriched my interior life. My relationship with God has now moved up to a higher level.
It has also helped me to understand more about the living presence of God in the Eucharist.
I am not Catholic, I am an Episcopalian, (but I am rather Catholic at heart). And although I have always believed in the living presence of Christ in the bread and wine, it has now moved to a higher level of understanding and reverence. I anxiously look forward to every oportunity I have to join with the living Christ in the Eucharistic feast.
The book is a bit long and does repeat a bit, but it is beautiful and well worth the time to read.
My copy is underlined, and marked with sticky notes and folded over pages of places that I have returned to again and again to meditate on.
I have nothing but praise for this book and recommend it to everyone of any religion.

Help for my daughter

I purchased this book for my daughter who has been experiencing post-partum depression after the birth of her first baby. After hearing Brook Shields' story on Oprah last year, I thought that her book might help my daughter get through this tough time. She did read the book, and except for a few differences between her situation and Brooks' situation, my daughter found this book to be very helpful and encouraging. She is slowly coming out of the depression. Instead of being in a "funk" for most of the day, she is beginning to feel the "veil" lift a little bit more each day, and has been able to get part of her "normal" life back. I know she will recover fully, and I want to think that this book was one of the reasons for her recovery. Thank you Brook Shields, for sharing your story.

Better Than I Expected

This is a great, informative book that I just finished reading, eight months pregnant. I can agree with the reviewer who suggests it may not be good reading for someone who is in the midst of post partum depression, but in that case perhaps a supportive friend or family member can read it and help the suffering mom get the help she needs. Granted, Brook's case was extreme, and perhaps (as suggested by another reviewer) was closer to post traumatic stress syndrome when you consider all the things in the few years and weeks that led up to this point in her life; so I don't think most women need to fear this extreme type of PPD happening to them. But, I think it's good to know how bad it CAN get and where to get help - there's a list of resources in the back of the book.

As for the negative reviews blasting Brook for her celebrity, don't let that determine whether you buy this book. Those are cheap shots, as if celebrities aren't allowed to be human (I mean, come on, the criticism for her having a nurse clean her off in the hospital, suggesting she's some diva for not doing it herself - she almost died after her emergency c-section! how inhumanly insensitive can you be?). I did not find the book to be self-glorifying in the least. Quite the opposite, in fact. She was real and put deeply personal stuff in this book for the benefit of women who may suffer the same or similar things, at the risk of getting exactly the type of criticism that some have put forth. Bravo to her.

Describes Post Partum Depression

WARNING! Depression hurts and those who do suffer depression may not enjoy this because the main content is her struggle downward. The majority of this book is on the downward trending patterns. This is not happy reading. Do not read this if you just had a baby; do not gift this book to a person who you think has post partum depression and you just want them to "see" that depression is treatable. This is definitely NON-pregnancy reading.

If you have never been able to explain the magnitude and self loathing of depression, Brooke has done it for you. She spends a lot of time describing the slippery slope of feeling out of sorts and not very excited into feeling your absolute and unexplainable worst. In the audio version she reads the story herself and it really does get across the stymied feelings of those around her who could not understand what was going on. She should be on top of the world. Instead she felt it was on top of her.

She documents her way through the maze of depression and page after page you keep saying to yourself "And the Doctor was not on to this???". I think that is part of the point of her writing this, normal healthy people can get very serious depression and the people around them do not know how to react and they do not put depression into the mix. They just work around the equation hoping that this will pass. In her case it was never going to pass on its own.

She covers the awful trip back to herself and how as a person she was as perplexed at how to "feel better" as those around her were to have her be better. This is at times a story you want to speed up and skip over more and more of the exhaustive recounting. Again that is the point of the story- depression is an exhaustive journey.

We recommend the audio more that the written word because it has Brook telling her own story and you can feel her emotions as she tells her story. We also recommend that you buy this discounted because it is not a body work that you keep in your collection unless this topic is related to your field. For the average reader: this is a read and pass it along to another book or an ah-ha! reading to explain something that you may have already have gone through. Five stars for this book. I experienced everything Brooke Shields described in her book almost 24 years ago with the birth of my first child. No one (family or doctors) knew what was wrong with me. Of course, I didn't know what was wrong with me since I had wanted a baby so badly and had been fine until the birth of my child. The feelings of despair and regret began in the hospital and almost immediately after giving birth. It was the most confusing period of my life because no one understood. I believe this book is very valuable to all women suffering from this devastating and, at times, unexpected illness.

As someone who has been through postpartum depression I have to say that Brooke's honesty in this book is incredible. Great book. It helped me revisit that horrible time and heal a bit more. Thank you, Brooke!

Incredible Story

I was really looking forward to this book, but oh what a disappointment. The title is completely misleading, there's very little 'on the trail' of anything. It just seems to me to be one of those pointless travelogues that a journalist wrote because his real purpose (finding a dinosaur) bore no fruition. Undoubtedly there were setbacks that hampered his search, but I don't think these warrant a book. My advice is to call it a day when you know you know you haven't got a story and leave the rest of us a few quid richer. On the plus side, I only have to read three pages every night before it sends me to sleep, so a pretty positive experience for anybody experiencing insomnia.

A good read but an even better document to the pursuit of dreams (well, maybe not dreams, but dinosaurs) by an adventurer. I couldn't help but think of Indiana Jones, except with a lot of modern red tape and government bureaucracy. Just being able to go after the dinosaur is a miracle, and Nugent paints a great picture for me. So many modern "adventures" are media-hyped, corporate events that pass as "sports" but this guy goes into the dark of the Congo and no one seems to care except the people he has to bribe and barter with along the way. Definitely check this one out.

A powerful and inspiring book.

A truly great book for anyone yearning for adventure! Nugent brings the wilds of the Congo into startling clarity. So vibrant are his descriptions, so compelling his pacing, that I couldn't put this book down for a moment once I began reading. I was so moved and inspired by Mr. Nugent's adventure looking for the Mokele-mbembe, that I spent a year searching for Bigfoot in the forests of the Pacific Northwest! Very few books have ever had such an impact on my life. I loved it.

The author has an amazing account to tell and he does it with great skill -- drawing his reader into the world, not only of primeval jungle and native folklore, but of the vibrant social structure of African life, where a visitor's knowledge of American television shows becomes a better item for trade than a pocketful of gold. As I finished the last, breathtaking chapter (it took every ounce of willpower not to peek ahead to it), I was ready to quit my job, pack up my bags, and set sail to Congo to go looking for the legendary beast myself. What a great read

This is the powerful and moving story of the remarkable Jewish woman who converted to Catholicism, gained fame as a great philosopher in Germany, became a Carmelite nun, and was put to death in a Nazi concentration camp. Recently beatified by Pope John Paul II, Edith Stein was a courageous, intelligent and holy woman who speaks powerfully to us even today.

Edith Stien was a Jew who in the 1920's of Germany converted to Catholicism and then became a nun much to the dismay of her orthodox mother. Those who are have heard of Edith Stien know that ultimately she was martyred in Auschwitz because of her outspokenness against the Nazi's as well as the fact that the Catholic Church in occupied Holland was the only large church organization willing to preach against the nazi regeim.

What must people don't know about Edith Stien was what an incredibly couragous and brillant woman she was even long before she was martyred. As this book tells the story , often in her own words and in the words of those that were close to her, she was a college professer, philosopher, and political activist at a time when a professional woman was at best a grade school teacher or nurse. Even as a nun she worked on her philosophy and her writing.

Waltraud Herbstrith does an excellent job portraying the complete Edith Stien, Her faith Her family and her intellect. An excellent book.

I consider this a "must read" for anyone interested in great women in history. The spiritual insights, life story, and heroic sacrifices of this brilliant woman, who was both a Jew and a Carmellite nun are amazing. Look closely at the cover art, as my interpretation was that Edith Stein possessed the "ear of God." The only complaint I have is the print was far too small. If it comes in a large print edition, you might be wise to order it. My eyesight is fairly normal.

This book is an excellent introduction to the life and thought of Edith Stein (St. Theresa Benedicta). Waltraud Herbstrith presents a biography that encompases the philosophical, spiritual, and personal aspects of her subject with great care. I came away from this book with a true appreciation for Edith Stein, in particular her writings on women and her deep love of God.
