  • understand and negotiate a lease
  • inspect a rental before moving in
  • fight discrimination
  • get needed repairs and maintenance
  • deal with a nosy landlord
  • break a lease with minimum fall-out
  • get your security deposit back
  • figure out rules for rent increases
  • fight an eviction

The 17th edition is completely updated with the latest laws and official legal forms, and now covers the new bankruptcy rules and how it affects evictions.

What should a tenant's notice to terminate tenancy look like?

Overall the book is good but there is a huge omission that has to be corrected. While there are sample forms in the book there is no sample notice to terminate tenancy. In fact, there is no information at all about what a tenant's notice to terminate should look like. This is an enormous problem and has to be corrected.

The Landlord's version of this book is much more complete. It includes a CD with PDF files for printing notices, etc. This Tenant's Rights books needs a CD with forms, including notice, to be included.

The book to have if your landlord is a jerk.

If your landlord is a jerk and you want to know what he (or she) can legally do or not do, this book will help. It will also give you some idea of when to go for professional help. It is of less help in figuring out what to do before you have to bring in the lawyers. I found it very helpfull to leave this book on the coffee table when my nosy landlord was snooping around my apartment. Apparently bad landlords don't like it when tenants know their rights.

Roof leaking? Sure, you can repair the problem and deduct it from your rent, but what if the landlord responds with an eviction notice? There is a lot of bad advice out there. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD do something. Know your rights! This book will keep you on the right side of the law.

DEEDS FOR CALIFORNIA REAL ESTATE by Mary Randolph, J.D. is another excellent updated guide: this to choosing the right kind of deed, creating it, then filing it with a county recorder. Step-by-step instructions for so doing have been updated in this latest 7th edition to include the latest forms and reflect the most recent legal changes.

If you need to change a deed on your house or other real property -- changed your name, separated, married, adding a survivor to inherit -- don't pay a lawyer or title company hundreds of dollars to do it. Buy this book. Read the instructions carefully, fill out the forms and then go to the county recorder's office and file it yourself. Even if you have to pay for parking.

If I can do it, anyone can do it. After finding this book such a great help, I have turned to Nolo Press time and again for self-help legal books. Written my will, created powers of attorney for my domestic partner, even helped my folks set up living trusts. If you read the book and decide you do need legal help, you'll be better prepared to ask questions and direct the professional to do what you want, and to do what you can yourself to save dollars. Just shaving a half hour off a lawyer's time spent more than pays for the book.

With almost 40 years of experience between them, Tyson and Brown tell you what you need to know to get the best deals out there. Whether youíre a first-time buyer or a real estate investor, youíll find tons of advice and practical information as well as the tools to negotiate like a pro with even the slickest real estate brokers.
    Amazon.com Review
This may be the best comprehensive guide for home buyers. Home Buying for Dummies is coauthored by Eric Tyson, author of several other books in the For Dummies series, and Ray Brown, a long-time real estate professional. Like other books in the series, this one is an easy and even entertaining read. But it does not gloss over details in pursuit of simplicity. Home Buying for Dummies covers all the bases, providing clear explanations and reasonable judgments on how to select a mortgage, hire a real estate agent, find the right house, and negotiate a good deal. The book goes further than most in providing helpful, specific information. For example, in discussing ways to save money for a future down payment, Home Buying for Dummies even includes the phone numbers for various mutual funds appropriate to different investment time frames. --Barry Mitzman

It Helped Me Buy My House
    Rating (4)
    Date: 2008-09-27

A guide to home buying in the classic "for Dummies" format. This book covers the basics and the not-so-basics of residential home buying and provides a step-by-step guide to purchasing your own house. Among other topics, the book provides valuable advise regarding how to get started, how to select an agent, how to shop for a mortgage and so forth. Better yet, it does so in an understandable, but not oversimplified manner. Starting from absolute scratch, I personally found the book invaluable in purchasing my first home. Home Buying for Dummies is certainly not the final word in real estate, but it provides sufficient and highly usable information for the first-time home buyer. Read it before you meet with a buyer's agent and you can't help but get off to a great start.

If you've never bought a home before, buy this book. It gives you a good overview of many areas of the homebuying process. If the thought of purchasing your first home is a bit daunting, educate yourself. This doesn't give you every single detail that you need to know, but it will help you ask informed questions and lead you on your way.

This is a great book for going through the probate process. It takes
you through the entire process and explains all the jargon. The only
problem I had with it is that if your probate includes anything which
is a little out-of-the-ordinary, e.g., heirs/beneficiaries who may contest the will, it does not help. However, one book cannot cover 100% of
the possible cases. This book probably covers 95% of the probate cases
and is helpful even if you are one of the "odd-cases" and you are not familiar with the probate process.

I am in the middle of dealing with a failing parent. I have consulted with all the recommended experts (accountants, multiple attorneys, social workers, private care managers, all the medical people). This book lays out clearly and very helpfully what I had hoped all the attorneys would've, but didn't. This book gives you the information you need to make your own decisions, rather than relying the 'experts' to decide for you. Worth every penny and the time taken to read it.

If you need legal knowledge, and can find a Nolo Press book that covers the topic, just buy it. You won't go wrong. This book is no exception.

An elderly family member is facing choices about whether to enter long term care. We needed to know all the ins and outs of various options, including Medicaid, Medicare, and veterans benefits. This book covers everthing of importance in clear, concise text.

One problem in a situation like this is that the "experts", like the case managers and social workers at hospitals and nursing homes, seldom have the time or incentive to tell you the whole story. It's up to you to figure out what your options are, and what protections you have. This book covers all of the bases in clear, understandable language.

Important note: several laws and regulations regarding transfer of assets and Medicaid/MediCal coverage eligability changed in early 2006. Make sure you understand the current laws. This book was published in late 2006 and is very up-to-date.

Like I said, another winner from Nolo.
