Product Description
Anyone Can Do It chronicles the start and evolution of a successful business dream. Beginning with the Hashemi siblings' first conversations (when the seed of the idea was planted) it follows the progress of Coffee Republic from business plan to the present day. Coffee Republic is now worth around £50m with 90 outlets around the UK.

This is a start-up business book for real people. Sahar and Bobby take the reader step by step through every aspect of starting and growing a business from asking 'why?' and writing the plan to hiring staff and letting go. The book is illustrated throughout with inspirational anecdotes from their own experience. Witty, honest, inspiring and easy to read, this book will motivate wanna be and current entrepreneurs to press in and step out. I like the way this brother/sister team lay the foundation of their coffee shop business. Certainly, you may not want to start a coffee business, but perhaps you want to start your own business but don't know where to begin. This book spells out what you'll need to do to get going as well as how to grow the business - based upon their own experience!

I am inspired and will certainly look through the book again and again.

Very Nice book about feeling the experience of setting up your own business. The Chapters in the book flow smoothly. You will never feel bored while reading the book. If you are buying this book thinking that you will start your own coffee republic after you finish reading it, then find another book as this book will not guide you to start a coffee shop business. The book basically, will give you a real life example of starting a business, I started a business and I can feel my self when I read the book, I even feel that I know Sahar and bobby Hashemi because you will live the experience they live. Especially the bootstrapping part!! I wish they release a 2nd book about what happened next in their business. I gave it a 4 stars because I really wished they added sample letters they used in their communication, how they approached suppliers for equipments and based on what they decided to buy their equipments and who helped them make the decisions.

I am a bubbing entrepreneur with a business plan, enthusiastic colleagues and little money. After seven months of trying with much encouragement from others and some financial commitments, I wish I had of picked this book up at the beginning of my search for funds. I would have done a few things differently. Every time I feel down I pick myself up before going to bed by picking up the book and rereading some chapters. The next day I am again ready to tackle the challenges ahead.

This book is a must for every entrepreneur, as well as people already in business looking for a fresh approach. Unlike others, it not just tells their story, it also shows how they did it, which is rare. Most books of this type just cover the big picture stuff which anyone can read in newspapers and magazines. It is very easy to read and difficult to put down. My first reading (on a flight) was in fact two readings, as I kept going back over earlier chapters.

An inspirational guide for clueless entrepreneurs!

Sarah describes the birth story of coffee chain "Coffee Republic" (see above). Her trip to NY, the cravings for skinny lattes and foamy cappuccinos, the idea, the awful coffee in the UK or rather the lack of it, the business plan and finally the first shop in South Molton street! Read this book and you will discover that passion, enthusiasm, gut feeling, good timing, support and hard work will eventually pay off! Sahar and her brother Bobby are both millionaires, only eight years after the first Coffee Republic bar appeared in the market.

About the Advanced Placement Program
The Advanced Placement Program is designed to provide high school students with the opportunity to pursue college-level studies while still attending high school. The program consists of two components: an AP course and an AP exam. In addition, the AP in Government and Politics curriculum is divided into two courses: United States Government & Politics and Comparative Government & Politics.

If you wish to pursue an Advanced Placement in Government and Politics course you may enroll in the United States course, the Comparative course, or both. You will be expected to leave the course(s) with college-level writing skills and knowledge of government and politics. Upon completion of the course(s), you may then take the corresponding AP exam(s). Test results are then used to grant course credit and/or determine placement level in the subject when you enter college.

AP exams are administered every May. The exam schedule has been designed to allow you the opportunity to take both exams, if you are enrolled in both courses. If the United States exam is given during the morning administration, the Comparative exam will be given during the afternoon administration.

The AP United States Government & Politics Exam
The United States exam is 145 minutes in length and is divided into two sections:

I. Multiple-Choice (50% of your grade): This 45-minute section is composed of 60 questions designed to measure your understanding of facts, concepts, and theories pertinent to United States government and politics. Your ability to analyze and understand data, and the patterns and consequences involved with political processes and behaviors will also be tested. In addition you must have knowledge of the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas relevant to United States government and politics.

II. Free-Response (50% of your grade): This 100-minute section consists of four mandatory questions, each of which accounts for one-fourth of your total free-response score. You should allot roughly 25 minutes - or one-quarter of the total time in the free-response segment - for each essay. Each question normally asks you to interrelate ideas from different content areas from among the topics listed below. In addition, you may also be asked to evaluate and define fundamental concepts in the study of United States politics, and possibly to analyze case studies that bear on political relationships and events in the United States. You will be required to demonstrate mastery of political interpretation, and analytic and organizational skills through writing. In addition, you may be presented with graphs, charts and tables from whose data you would be asked to draw logical conclusions.

Here's a breakdown of coverage on the United States exam:

Topics / % of Exam
I. Constitutional Underpinnings of United States Government / 5-15%
II. Political Beliefs and Behaviors / 10-20%
III. Political Parties, Interest Groups, and Mass Media / 10-20%
IV. Institutions of National Government: The Congress, the Presidency, the Bureaucracy, and the Federal Courts / 35-45%
V. Public Policy / 5-15%
VI. Civil Rights and Civil Liberties / 5-15%

The AP Comparative Government & Politics Exam
The Comparative exam is 145 minutes long and is divided into two sections:

I. Multiple-Choice (50% of your grade): This 45-minute section is composed of 60 questions designed to measure your understanding of facts, concepts, and theories pertinent to Comparative government and politics. Your ability to analyze and understand data, and the patterns and consequences involved with political processes and behaviors will also be tested. The countries normally tested in the multiple-choice questions include Great Britain, France, the former Soviet Union (Commonwealth of Independent States), and China; these are referred to as the core countries tested on the exam. For certain questions, basic knowledge of the United States will be assumed.

II. Free-Response (50% of your grade): This 100-minute section consists of four mandatory questions, each of which accounts for one-fourth of your total free-response score. You should allot roughly 25 minutes - or one-quarter of the total time in the free-response segment - for each essay. Comparative Free-Response questions may require you to compare one or two of the core countries (Great Britain, France, China, and the former Soviet Union) with the developing nations of either India, Mexico, or Nigeria. To do this, you must be able to demonstrate knowledge of the politics of one of these developing nations.

Here's a breakdown of coverage on the Comparative exam:

Topics / % of Exam
I. The Sources of Public Authority and Political Power / 5-15%
II. Society and Politics / 5-15%
III. The Relationship Between Citizen and State / 5-15%
IV. Political and Institutional Frameworks / 35-45%
V. Political Change / 15-25%
VI. The Comparative Method / 5-10%

About the Review Sections
As mentioned earlier, this book includes two reviews: one for United States Government and Politics, the other for Comparative Government and Politics.

The United States Government and Politics Review covers all of the key information you'll need to score well on the United States exam. These topics include:

- The Federal Government
- Political Institutions and Special In...

The Comparative part is largely useless ofcourse because they come out with new countries every year. However, the US government part was right on. It doesn't go into every detail that you need to know, but it gets through enough material so that a student cramming would find this book golden. Buy it for a quick review before the test, not as a study guide througout the year and you will love it.

This book was great in prepping me for the exam. Still dont know what i got, but it covered all the major issues in Comparative Politics that I needed to know. Also, it skips all the BS about good test-taking and strategies and junk and gets right to the info. Comprehensive review for each country in Comparative Politics. But, one word of caution... there are a few topics not covered that will be on the exam, such as current issues, and systems and processes (like Interest Articulation, Aggregation, etc.). Learn that stuff and you're good!

Product Description
Develop a Winning Investment Strategy -- with Expert Advice from "The Nation's #1 Money Manager"

Peter Lynch's "invest in what you know" strategy has made him a household name with investors both big and small.

An important key to investing, Lynch says, is to remember that stocks are not lottery tickets. There's a company behind every stock and a reason companies -- and their stocks -- perform the way they do. In this book, newly revised and updated for the paperback edition, Peter Lynch shows you how you can become an expert in a company and how you can build a profitable investment portfolio, based on your own experience and insights and on straightforward do-it-yourself research. There's no reason the individual investor can't match wits with the experts, and this book will show you how.

In Beating the Street, Lynch for the first time:

* Explains how to devise a mutual fund strategy

* Shows how he goes about picking stocks, step-by-step

* Describes how the individual investor can improve his or her investment performance to rival that of the experts of the investment clubs.

1992 investing book is dated but still offers insight
Rating (4)
Date: 2008-06-14

Peter Lynch discusses his successful 13 years of running Fidelity's Magellan mutual fund. After a short professional autobiography, he explains his methodology for selecting stocks and explores a few dozen January 1992 stock picks in detail. Lynch wrote this book in the last days before the ubiquity of personal computers and the Internet's copious and accessible financial information. Still, Lynch offers pithy investment advice (each unfortunately titled with a boldface "Peter's Principle") that transcend the book's early-1990s setting. His enthusiasm should inspire most beginning to intermediate investors for whom this material is recommended. Due to its age, used copies of this book should be widely and cheaply available.

Incredibly Useful Formula for Investment Success
Rating (5)
Date: 2008-03-07

This book is old school, but boy is it a classic. I've always been fascinated with stocks and the stock market but in the late 90s, past the apex of the day trading craze, I decided to set a small amount of money to partake in some of the action. I set up my account, started watching CNBC like a nut, and dove right in. Before doing so, I used Mr. Lynch's book as my guide and the biggest thing I learned is to stay grounded and avoid the mania and manic depression of the market. This book is not for slick, know-it-alls with pretensions of timing the market and making fast money, Vegas style. No, this book is for sober grown-ups who are willing to take a longer and more rational approach.

I think the best lesson the book offers is to stick to investing in companies you know and trust (and buy from). By following that simple advice I've been able to earn very handsome gains. In addition, the primer on how to read a balance sheet is easily worth the price of admission. There's just lots of great information presented that will make you a relatively savvy investor. This book demystifies a lot of the perceived complexity of the market and shows ordinary people how to get in on the action. It's sober and timeless advice you can use even today.

Not as good as "One up on Wall Street," but better than "Earn to Learn"
Rating (4)
Date: 2007-11-26

After managing the Fidelity Magellan fund for thirteen years, mutual fund guru Peter Lynch retired on May 31, 1990 at the age of forty-six. Since then, Lynch continues to propound his message that the amateur investor has a distinct comparative advantage in stock picking relative to Wall Street professionals. For example, mutual fund managers are restricted to investing no more than 5% of their total assets in any one stock, and they cannot own more that 10% of any one company's stock. These constraints limit their profit, but not for the average investor. Lynch adamantly chants his mantra, "Buy stocks! If this is the only lesson you learn from this book, then writing it will have been worth the trouble" (18).

One major reason for touting stocks is that they have grown by an average of 11% (i.e. 8% capital gain + 3% dividend) per/year over the last seventy-years, despite over forty market corrections. Aside from short-term stock-price fluctuations, Lynch believes that in the long-run there exists a strong correlation between the success of a business and its stock price. Therefore, anyone can successfully invest in stocks provided they use common sense observation, and proven valuation strategies that they recheck every three-months. Lynch recommends the NAIC (National Association of Investors Clubs) to neophyte investors who want to learn how to evaluate a business, and be part of an organization whose methods routinely beat the market averages. Amazingly, 75% of professional mutual fund managers fail to outperform the S&P after fees.

When searching for possible companies to invest in, Lynch visits the Burlington Mall in Massachusetts to see where everyone shops. Lynch says, "The very homogeneity of taste in food and fashion that makes for a dull culture also makes fortunes for owners" (152). When analyzing stocks Lynch looks at several prospective indicators:

Fundamental Analysis:
1) Look at for stocks whose charts show earnings above price. These businesses have value that have yet to be priced-in
2) The P/E ratio shouldn't be greater than the business' earnings growth rate
3) Particularly in retail stocks, look for an increase in same-store sales
4) Best conditions for businesses to grow earnings are in niche or regional markets where there is little competition and much room for expansion
5) Insider buying is a good sign that the business is doing well
6) Look for arbitrage opportunities where a business is selling at a discount relative to its peers despite similar composition and performance
7) When taking a "top-down" approach look at the "affordability index," median home value, and % of mortgage defaults published by the National Association of Home Builders

Technical Analysis:
1) Buy stocks on Mondays, and from October through December when historical prices are lowest

If you are looking for books that will sharpen your skills as an investor put this one on the top of your list along with books about Warren Buffett and Phillip Fisher. Peter Lynch was one of the all time greatest mutual fund managers ever during his time at the Magellen Fund. We are fortunate that he wrote several books in his retirement. This book will give you a good understanding of Mr. Lynch's investment style which include: investing only in companies you understand, use the knowledge you have of your own industry to outperform Wall Street analysts, trips to the mall are great opportunities for research by looking at which stores are the busiest, and keeping your eyes wide open to hot trends around you. Lynch believes in buying stocks at reasonable P/E ratios, and loves to buy if the P/E matches the earnings growth rate of a company. He shys away from companies when the stock price out performs the earnings and the stock becomes over priced. Lynch believes that eventually the stock price will reflect the value of a company, so it is great to get an excellent company for a low stock price. You get many examples of how he picked stocks for his Barron's round table in 1993, this gives excellent insight into how his mind works, Peter Lynch is truly a genius at stock picking for long term investment. You will receive 25 golden rules from Peter Lynch in this book, follow them and you will do very well in the market.

Product Description
In a study crucial to our understanding of American social inequality, Edna Bonacich and Richard Appelbaum investigate the return of sweatshops to the apparel industry, especially in Los Angeles. The "new" sweatshops, they say, need to be understood in terms of the decline in the American welfare state and its strong unions and the rise in global and flexible production. Apparel manufacturers now have the incentive to move production to wherever low-wage labor can be found, while maintaining arm's-length contractual relations that protect them from responsibility. The flight of the industry has led to a huge rise in apparel imports to the United States and to a decline in employment.
Los Angeles, however, remains a puzzling exception in that its industry employment has continued to grow, to the point where L.A. is the largest center of apparel production in the nation. Not only the availability of low-wage immigrant (often undocumented) workers but also the focus on moderately priced, fashion-sensitive women's wear makes this possible. Behind the Label examines the players in the L.A. apparel industry, including manufacturers, retailers, contractors, and workers, evaluating the maldistribution of wealth and power. The authors explore government and union efforts to eradicate sweatshops while limiting the flight to Mexico and elsewhere, and they conclude with a description of the growing antisweatshop movement.

A fascinating insight into a large and glamorous industry

"Los Angeles is now the apparel manufacturing center of the United States" (page 16). 2,900 sewing companies work in LA for the 185 firms. Sadly, the apparel manufactureres use sweatshops.

According to Dr. Bonacich and Dr. Appelbaum, a "sweatshop" is a factory that fails to pay a living wage and does nto allow a worker to purchase a house and health care(page 11). Sadly, workers make less than the poverty line of $7,200 a year. Hence, concerned citizens like us wonder how sweatshops come to be and exist?

Again, according to Dr. Bonacich and Dr. Appelbaum, sweatshops are caused by 1) a high turnover in styles (14), 2) low tech tools, such as sewing machines, 3) the neglect of union representation, 4) cheap start-ups in other countries, 5) cheap labor, and 6) bossy retailers. The authors write, "Thousands of contractors can produce small lots rapidly. The city's industry is primed for the production of fashion at cheap prices" (p. 18). Thus, Los Angeles is the "sweatshop capital of the U.S" (p. 19).

A city of sweatshops is not a healthy city. ""Polarization is destructive to society." A Chinese person making $25.00 a month cannot afford $100 pair of shoes" (p. 24). Furthermore, immigrants do not have access to politicians, since wealthy people can buy lobbyists and call the govenor and threaten to move the industry. 2.9 million Angelinos make less than $20,000 yr.

The solution to sweatshops is to spread the cost-cutting activities in every area of apparel manufacturing. "Yet cost cutting is never aimed at the executives professionals or profits." As a result, "the garment industry is a throwback to the earliest phases of the industrial revolution" (p. 14).

I hope the supervisors in the valuable garment industry read this fine book.

The complete guide to choosing and using GIS in business

Over the last few years, Geographical Information Systems (GIS) have become less expensive and easier to use, and the tremendous potential of GIS to boost business productivity is finally being realized. Incorporating the latest developments in GIS technology and applications, this book explores what GIS has to offer companies in many different areas of industry today and how it can be successfully integrated into existing business operations.

Building on the success of its predecessor, this Second Edition covers every key aspect of using GIS in business. It explains what GIS is and helps readers gain a clear understanding of the costs and benefits of moving to a GIS. New case studies from both the manufacturing and service sectors illustrate how GIS can support tactical and strategic business decision-making, and the book's unbiased coverage of commercially available GIS software is invaluable for anyone involved in selecting a GIS system and getting it up and running.

With a practical, real--world approach, the book also addresses the main issues involved in GIS implementation, paying particular attention to the integration of GIS within an organization's existing management information system.

An increasingly vital tool for operations and delivery of goods and services, GIS makes terrific business sense for many companies-but only when properly selected and applied.

This book gives GIS consultants, practitioners, and others considering the move to GIS the foundation they need to put this powerful technology to work effectively in business.

Product Description

Drawing upon a six-year research project at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business, James C. Collins and Jerry I. Porras took eighteen truly exceptional and long-lasting companies and studied each in direct comparison to one of its top competitors. They examined the companies from their very beginnings to the present day -- as start-ups, as midsize companies, and as large corporations. Throughout, the authors asked: "What makes the truly exceptional companies different from the comparison companies and what were the common practices these enduringly great companies followed throughout their history?"

Filled with hundreds of specific examples and organized into a coherent framework of practical concepts that can be applied by managers and entrepreneurs at all levels, Built to Last provides a master blueprint for building organizations that will prosper long into the 21st century and beyond.

Amazon.com Review
Built to Last became an instant business classic. This audio abridgement is read by the authors, who alternate chapters. Collins is a bit breathlessly enthusiastic, but clear and interesting; Porras, unfortunately, is poorly inflected and wooden. They set out to determine what's special about "visionary" companies--the Disneys, Wal-Marts, and Mercks, companies at the very top of their game that have demonstrated longevity and great brand image. The authors compare 18 "visionary" picks to a control group of "successful-but-second-rank" companies. Thus Disney is compared to Columbia Pictures, Ford to GM, and so on.

A central myth, according to the authors, is that visionary companies start with a great product and are pushed into the future by charismatic leaders. Usually false, Collins and Porras find. Much more important, and a much more telling line of demarcation between a wild success like 3M and an also-ran like Norton, is flexibility. 3M had no master plan, little structure, and no prima donnas. Instead it had an atmosphere in which bright people were not afraid to "try a lot of stuff and keep what works."

If you listen to this audiocassette on your daily commute, you may discover whether you are headed to a "visionary" place of work--and, if so, whether you are the kind of employee who fits your employer's vision. (Running time: two hours, two cassettes) --Richard Farr

Amazing Book!!

I had to read this book for my management course and I thought it was going to be yet another boring business book, but IT IS AMAZING!! The authors made me completely rethink how I think companies achieve success and had some of the most in depth research I've come across.

It doesn't matter if you're in business or not, no matter who you are, you'll enjoy getting a fresh perspective that applies to business and our personal lives too. The book slows down towards the end, but overall it's a must read!

The "Core Values" of Corporate Business of the Yesterday and Today
Rating (5)

Let me just say, I have read two books by Jim Collins and his research team and I have not been at all disappointed. All chapters were explained without complex sentence writings and without all the extra stuff. For example, "Resiliency (not perfection) is the signature of greatness, be it in a person, an organization, or a nation." Jim Collins provided within each chapter insights on how to achieve at any position within a corporate company such as an employee, manager, senior executive, board member, and CEO. The book does mainly talk about people at the "top" but, the research information speaks for itself. Comparing companies such as Procter and Gamble, Walt Disney, Merck, Johnson and Johnson, Wal-Mart to Colgate, Columbia Pictures, Pfizer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Ames, respectively. The researchers group and Jim Collins provided and proved what facts can represent to a reader. If you are willing to take your time and read with a understanding that anyone can create a "visionary company" of tomorrow. Highly Recommended to all future leaders with the pursue of how to develop what works and what doesn't.

Finally, a book that includes ideas that are based on research, not just someone's good ideas and stories. If this doesn't change what you are doing in your business, you'd better stop reading, start writing and tell us all your secrets.
Jim Collins is a great, inspiring author wh will engage you the whole way through.

A Must Read Together With Good To Great
Rating (5)
Date: 2008-04-28

I enjoyed reading this book very much. It seems the company and the organization as an organic system within a larger system, and which purpose is not simply to make money (although, companies managed this way always do). It brings also the importance of the human side into management and how important it is to have a solid system of core values, beliefs, principles and mission. I highly recommended together with Good To Great, even in spite of the fact that some of the covered companies (like Ford, Sony, and Motorola) not being able to keep their greatness consistently.
