Product Description
Darrell Huff runs the gamut of every popularly used type of statistic, probes such things as the sample study, the tabulation method, the interview technique, or the way the results are derived from the figures, and points up the countless number of dodges which are used to fool rather than inform.
Amazon.com Review
"There is terror in numbers," writes Darrell Huff in How to Lie with Statistics. And nowhere does this terror translate to blind acceptance of authority more than in the slippery world of averages, correlations, graphs, and trends. Huff sought to break through "the daze that follows the collision of statistics with the human mind" with this slim volume, first published in 1954. The book remains relevant as a wake-up call for people unaccustomed to examining the endless flow of numbers pouring from Wall Street, Madison Avenue, and everywhere else someone has an axe to grind, a point to prove, or a product to sell. "The secret language of statistics, so appealing in a fact-minded culture, is employed to sensationalize, inflate, confuse, and oversimplify," warns Huff.

Although many of the examples used in the book are charmingly dated, the cautions are timeless. Statistics are rife with opportunities for misuse, from "gee-whiz graphs" that add nonexistent drama to trends, to "results" detached from their method and meaning, to statistics' ultimate bugaboo--faulty cause-and-effect reasoning. Huff's tone is tolerant and amused, but no-nonsense. Like a lecturing father, he expects you to learn something useful from the book, and start applying it every day. Never be a sucker again, he cries!

Even if you can't find a source of demonstrable bias, allow yourself some degree of skepticism about the results as long as there is a possibility of bias somewhere. There always is.

Read How to Lie with Statistics. Whether you encounter statistics at work, at school, or in advertising, you'll remember its simple lessons. Don't be terrorized by numbers, Huff implores. "The fact is that, despite its mathematical base, statistics is as much an art as it is a science." --Therese Littleton

Should be Required Reading!
Rating (5)
Date: 2008-11-03

"How to Lie with Statistics" should be required reading before allowing anyone in today's world to call themselves an adult. And, yes, there should be strict testing for understanding this book before anyone is allowed to leave public (or private) schools and take part in real life.

This book shows some of the ways media such as newspapers, TV, internet, etc. decieve you. Besides the media (especially advertisers); politicians, lawyers, and all sorts of other folks behave like confidence men and try to get your money, your trust, your vote, and your beliefs.

IMMUNIZE YOURSELF! Read this book. Buy this book. Study this book. Memorize this book!

This book will help you avoid the crooked people.

Excellent Start for the beginners to the subject of Statistics

Great title - and very factual

This brief book, written in 1954, is quite appropriate even for today. It shows how people make statistics to be what they want the interpretation to be. That is to say, it shows how people are swindled with numbers. There are, indeed, too many lies in numbers. Politicians, business leaders and the Press are very good at the tricks of twisting numbers. As Mr. Darrell Huff submits (p.9), "The crooks already know these tricks, honest men should learn them in self defense." This book will be a g great read, for those that want to be educated. Classic introduction to the topic

This is a classic introduction to the language of statistics and how a few well placed numbers/graphs/terms can distort reality. I use this as a supplementary reading for my undergrad students and they love it. It helps to clarify why language, numbers, and representations are so dangerous.

An entertaining and informative look at how statistics can be mis-used!

It is really about how to catch when statistics are being mis-used. I first read the book when I was in high school and it had first been printed. It helped me. I still give this book as a present to the high school students in my family.

I recommend this for those in high school, especially those who are math adverse. The book helps create critical thinking skills and how to avoid many deceptions.

My Mother passed away and we thought all the paperwork was in order and it was not. I got this book from Amazon and it has outlined every detail and possible stituation. I went and got all the forms and and in the middle of probate right now. Very, very well written for a simple probate case and non complicated estates.
If there are people who will contest the will or complicated properties, business deals; most likely, you will need a lawyer and probating yourself will not work. But if it is very clear and simple, you can probabe yourself. Great book, worh every penny spent on it.

This is a great book for going through the probate process. It takes
you through the entire process and explains all the jargon. The only
problem I had with it is that if your probate includes anything which
is a little out-of-the-ordinary, e.g., heirs/beneficiaries who may contest the will, it does not help. However, one book cannot cover 100% of
the possible cases. This book probably covers 95% of the probate cases
and is helpful even if you are one of the "odd-cases" and you are not familiar with the probate process.

This was a nice book. It points out that women and men typically have different motivations for starting their own businesses. The author says men are usually starting a business for their healthy ego and to make money. And women instead start a business so they can have more control in their lives. There might actually be some truth to that - at least for the older generation of men and women who start businesses.

I'm actually part of the younger generation of men and women born in 1962 or thereafter. And I don't think men and women (my peers) are all that different today when starting a business. Both sexes in my generation are faced with job opportunities that lack security, pension plans, and wages that can be lived on comfortably. Both sexes are faced with escalating gasoline prices without a commensurate jump in their salaries. And both sexes are competing for the same jobs. Both sexes are quitting the corporate world and starting their own businesses today because they see more opportunity AND CONTROL in doing that instead of collecting a W-2.

This book talks about the unique strengths of women, and the author may have a point there. But I don't think (1) trusting intuition, (2) focusing on relationships, and (3) putting more emphasis on life balance are strengths that women have a lock on.

But what men of my generation have an abundance of is male role models in business. And the wonderful thing about this book is that the author has interviewed a few successful women entrepreneurs and documented their stories so women in my generation can read the book and benefit by hearing from female role models in business. Female readers can gain words of wisdom from other women who have been there and done that. And that's what makes this book so good. 5 stars!

PS. A nice companion book to this one is Small Business Big Life (ISBN: 140160336X). Consider giving it a read.

I enjoyed this book very much, especially since one of the profiled entrepreneurs has a very similar business to what my dream is; it was a surprising peek into the work I aspire to create and integrate into my daily life.

As far as information goes, this is not an all-encompassing "what to do" to check off your list as you go about starting a business; but rather, an uplifting and inspiring read that affirms the burning desire within yourself to launch a venture of your very own. Wanna-be-business-owners need to be inspired from time to time as our very creative natures overanalyze details to the point of discouraging ourselves from even making that first step.

Upon beginning the read you are welcomed with the profound statement that if you have a strong desire to start a business, very few things will satisfy that desire, other than starting a business. What a refreshing thing to hear! - that I am not simply obsessed for some odd reason - reading this book helps me come to an understanding of my own entrepreneurial spirit.

We all long to make our mark on this world in some small way, and for some, that mark is to create a company from one's own passion and ideals and vision. At the VERY least, this book is a must-have to reach for again and again for inspiration.

Earn a living writing advertising copy, producing flyers and brochures, or ghostwriting, without leaving home. This guide explains how to set up a home-based writing business.

Amazon.com Review
A front-page byline in The New York Times! A People magazine cover story! A travel assignment in Katmandu! Dream on. "This is a book," says author Lucy V. Parker, "about commercial writing, business writing, nonfiction writing. It is a book about obtaining practical, often unglamorous assignments that can pay the bills." Sure, celebrity profiles and investigative journalism can be thrilling, but so can paying the rent. Besides, someone has to write all those newsletters, brochures, press releases, speeches, instructional manuals, and articles for employee magazines. With Parker's help, you can write a business plan, form a business, market your services, learn what to charge (and how to collect your due), and deal with taxes and contracts. Parker even tells you how to cope with the loneliness inherent in running a solo venture. Hint: online chat rooms are OK, but "people breaks" are better. With profiles of 10 successful professionals from a variety of specialties and a list of 60 key assignments for home-based writers. --Jane Steinberg

A previous edition of Lucy V. Parker's "How To Start A Home-Based Writing Business" was recommended by the staff of Midwest Book Review to anyone aspiring to earn a living through their writing as being "A superbly presented, complete-in-one-volume manual. My writing has become more focused since reading Ms. Parker's book. It is a detailed work on writing a business plan and planning a business. It guides the reader into his/her specialty and since my writing lacked focused, this book is on point.

This book is a very good overview of the business of writing from home. Just don't expect to see much indepth information here.

A good book for those just starting out and looking for information on the generalities of home-based work as well as some marketing ideas for the writing business specifically.

If your brand new to this area then I highly recommend this book. If you already have a home-based business or know most of the information needed for starting one up then I suggest other more specific books for your writing business.

One of the best books I have read on freelance writing. If you're ready to launch your own writing business or want to maintain a successful writing business, make sure you read this book by Lucy Parker. It's one of those books you will keep turning back to for insightful advice. I have been an avid reader of How to Start a Home-Based Writing Business since the first edition.
