Product Description
IBS is one of our nation's most untalked-about ailments, but millions of people - mostly women - suffer from the debilitating condition, one that must be controlled primarily through diet. Contrary to what may sufferers believe, eating for IBS does not mean deprivation, never going to restaurants, boring food, or an unhealthily limited diet. It does mean cutting out such trigger foods as red meat, dairy, most fats, caffeine, alcohol, and insoluble fiber. Heather Van Vorous, who has suffered from IBS since age 9 and gradually learned how to control her IBS symptoms through dietary modifications, collects here 175 recipes she has created over 20 years. IBS sufferers will be thrilled to discover that they can enjoy traditional homestyle cooking, ethnic foods, rich desserts, snacks, and party foods - and don't have to cook weird or special meals for themselves while their families follow a "normal" diet. Eating with IBS will forever revolutionize the way people with IBS eat - and live.

My wife was told she may have IBS so we decided to gather info and see about working on a better diet since it helps with IBS. The challenge for us is she had limited tastes in food and adverse reactions to other foods. Once we got the book. she scanned through it to discover maybe three recipes she would enjoy.
I would advise anyone considering this book to find a physical copy so you can see all the recipes and then decide if you want to buy it. Amazon has great prices, so come back here and buy it. My your local library might have it.

I love love love this book! Finally someone who knows what she's talking about and who truly understands the pain that we're going through. The recipes are absolutely delicious and easy to make. I buy all the groceries for the recipes on the weekend and then cook some meals for the coming week and keep them in the freezer. It's good to avoid the stress of worrying about what to eat when there's no time to cook, and you're not sure what you can eat without dying from pain anyway. I can especially recommend the Sweet Cinnamon Zucchini Bread and the Italian Lemon Tuna & Basil Salad. Yum, yum, yum... :-)

It is about 70% for attacks of IBS when it comes to food for me; however that 70% is reducing. This IBS cookbook was a blessed find and money well spent. The recipes range from 'everday' meals to fancy dishes when having company.
Some recipes I have tried and absolutely melt for are:
- Louisiana Barbecued 'Catfish' sandwiches. (I followed the recipe and used the sauce on Tuna filets. Not a catfish person - those are 2 animals that should not cross breed)
- Jamaican Chicken with Ginger Peach Dressing (yum)
- Gingerbread
- Fettucine with Creamy Butternut Squash Sauce
The recipes are neutral, for additional special needs. They call for Soy based products, which is an added bonus for milk allergy.
The recipes are sometimes time consuming, but indeed, worth the effort. Having a guide with IBS friendly food allows for your own personal creativity.

This book can give hope to people suffering from IBS. It is full of useful tips and guidance for a pain-free life. The recipes are fantastic and it certainly helps that the author herself suffers from IBS. Since I've read it and have been following the strict diet, I have been a lot healthier and happier. It is better to follow a strict diet and be healthy than to think you're eating "whatever you want" and being sick all the time. Even though the IBS diet is strict, this book has converted many fabulous recipes with safe alternative ingredients-- the meals are safe and taste great too!

Hi,
Yes, many suggestions in this book works as prevention. But when IBS hits me, I finally found quick relief - via Acupuncture. Mayo Clinic's Dr. Sood listed Acupuncture as his top ten alternative medicine. Here is his write up: "In this treatment from traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncturists insert thin needles into strategic, energy-balancing points on the body. Acupuncture can prevent and treat nausea and vomiting and help relieve many types of pain, including that from osteoarthritis, low back pain, neck pain, headaches and postsurgical pain. Patients who receive acupuncture typically receive up to 12 treatments, usually given once or twice a week. " One word of advise - most acupuncturists are not good. Ours teach at a Eastern Medicine University in Sunnyvale, CA and he is honest and excellent.

I have two jobs and I travel 3 to 5 hours a day for work. Oh, yes I am "On the Run". The Author gives some GREAT insight into making small yet very powerful changes to help me make better food choices. I am very glad I have her book and I would recommend it to anyone else who does not like to cook, is always on the run and has very little time to dedicate to meal preparation. The Author hits a Home-Run... She did not get 5 out of 5 because that would mean the book was perfect and come on what book or anything is truly perfect? Great Job ! ! !

Outstanding resource!

As a person who finds it hard to fit in meals between appointments, I found this book to be an outstanding nutritional resource. Tribole really packs this book with helpful comparison charts, such as comparisons of energy bars (please expand!), best bets in frozen cuisine, and brand-name snacks. The "one-minute specials" recipes, grocery shopping tips, and fast-food best bet chart were also extremely welcome. There is a section for weight-loss too, though it doesn't take over the book, which is broad in scope for all readers to enjoy. In fact, this is the most practical book on nutrition for busy people with real lives that I have seen. I highly recommend it.

I rarely recommend a book, but I'm feeling that I must now! The book is called Eating on the Run by Evelyn Tribole. This book brings weight management down to its barebones--you learn what your body needs as basic nutrition, how to eat and feel satisfied, the problems with diets and vitamins and how they can hurt you, dispels myths, and how to apply good eating habits efficiently w/o trading taste or satisfaction. You know me, I LOOOOOVE food but I'm just not much of a cook. And like everyone else, I'm just trying to figure out how to take care of my body. This isn't a cookbook, but there are several recipes throughout the book--many and enough to have you up and going with good eating habits. Since it is geared to busy people, it's an easy, straightforward read that really helps you to understand weight management and how to apply it. In other books, I usually learn a lot then forget it because it just isn't realistic. The author has a regular column (Recipe Makeover) in Shape magazine, is the spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, and qualified for the 1984 Olympic marathon event. Therefore, she has the credentials. So, in my most sincerist verve, I totally recommend reading this book as a way to change eating habits and understand weight management for yourself.

Product Description
Are you ready to kick it up a notch? Wait -- forget that. Are you ready to kick it up notches unknown to humankind? Finally, Emeril has written the book his fans of Emeril Live and Essence of Emeril have been waiting for -- a collection of his very favorite recipes from both shows. It's all here -- from cooking up Fall River memories like St. John's Kale Soup, Roasted Scrod with Parsley Potatoes, and Boston Cream Pie with his mom, Hilda, to Louisiana specialties like Creole Spiced Blue Crabs with Green Onion Dipping Sauce, Fried Eggplant with Shrimp Stew-Fay, and Blueberry Beignets. Hey, this isn't rocket science, but it's good eating, with starters like Caramelized Salmon with Cilantro Potato Salad and Stuffed Morels with Crawfish Remoulade. This isn't Kansas anymore, Toto, and these are salads like you've never had them -- Herb-Tossed White Asparagus, Fresh Crabmeat, and Grilled Radicchio Salad, Emeril's BLT Salad, and Molasses Duck Salad. Does pork fat rule at your house (and if it doesn't, why not?)? Then take your pick of the pig --- Homemade Bacon, Andouille Stuffed Jalapeqos, and Pork Burgers in Gravy with French-Fried Sweet Potatoes. And don't limit yourself to one part of the barnyard -- try Emerilized Chicken Cordon Bleu, Funky Lamb Shanks, Pan-Roasted Filet Mignon Stuffed with English Stilton and Walnuts, or Smothered Oxtails over Spinach and Sweet Corn Mash. Emeril's TV Dinners not only includes more than 150 recipes, it is jam-packed with candid black-and-white photography of Emeril behind the scenes, in front of the cameras, on tour, and really live in his New Orleans restaurants.
|
Amazon.com Review
Contrary to what the title may suggest, this is not a cookbook for the meals that come packaged in those nifty foil trays for your convenience. Emeril's TV Dinners is another stellar cookbook from master chef and television star Emeril Lagasse. This is the man who succeeded legendary chef Paul Prudhomme in New Orleans and then took the rest of the food world by storm. His rise has included a few award-winning cookbooks, including Emeril's New New Orleans Cooking, Louisiana Real and Rustic, and Emeril's Creole Christmas. At the same time as Lagasse was turning out terrific food at his restaurants and recipes in his cookbooks, he was hosting the widely acclaimed Emeril Live and The Essence of Emeril on the TV Food Network. And that is what Emeril's TV Dinners is all about--150 of Emeril's favorite recipes from his award-winning shows. But this cookbook isn't simply a revisit to some old television shows; this is vintage Emeril--great recipes from one of America's best chefs. Like all of his books and shows, the most refreshing thing about Emeril's TV Dinners is the approach. As he is fond of saying, we aren't building any rocket ships, we're cooking--plain and simple, and he's an expert at making great food easy and fun. His enthusiasm is infectious. You can almost taste Pecan Crusted Mozzarella with Baby Greens, Rock Shrimp Stuffed Flounder, or Emeril's Potato Truffle Charlotte. If you didn't see the shows, Emeril's TV Dinners offers another chance to find out why Emeril is still one of the best chefs in America today. --Mark O. Howerton

The directions are spelled out pretty well, and the ingredients lists in the margins make sure you have everything. My wife was born and raised and New Orleans, and even she is impressed with some of "my" cooking from this book. Thanks Emeril!

I got this because I told someone I liked Emeril (about the five times a year I manage to catch his show). It's a gorgeous book and I highly recommend it for any avid Emeril fan. The recipes are well organized, the layout is beautiful, and it's a collector's item for a fan. For a cook who doesn't love/watch Emeril, it doesn't offer much.
I also tend to do a lot of healthy and low-fat cooking, which this book is not amenable to. The food is delicious, but you pay for that it fat in calories.
Many of the recipes are accompanied by a narrative from Emeril about, for example, the different types of potatoes you might use in this recipe, or the techniques used in cooking it, or a cooking history lesson. These make the book a stand-out item, but again, it mostly stands out for the rabid Emeril fans.

I tend to think Emeril's books get a lot of low rated reviews because people seem to either love or hate the guy. I've always looked at Emeril as an entertainer first as opposed to a chef whose receipes I'm going to run out tomorrow and try to make. While the title of this book may lead to the belief that these these may be recipes related to those things that camein aluminum tins. The TV refers to his TV show as he presents 150 recipes from his year on the Food network.
There are some very exotic dishes to be found in the pages of this book. Things like Creole Spiced Blue Crabs with Green Onion Dipping Sauce and Rock Shrimp Stuffed Flounder,or Emeril's Potato Truffle Charlotte. From Fall River, MA to New Orleans you get 150 classic recipes. Whether its Cajun or dishes inspired by his Portugese heritage, there's quite a diversified set of recipes to be found here, all with Emerils enjoyable way of presenting them in a fun an entertaining way.
Honestly I will never make most of these dishes. It's just a blast to read. As I said I love wathcing and reading Emeril with his knowledge about food and cooking.

Vermont is the home of The Cooks Garden, America's premier organic seed catalogue. Since 1984, The Cook's Garden has been the ultimate source for kitchen gardeners seeking European-style greens, heirloom vegetables, radiant flowers, and pungent herbs. Each winter more than one million eager gardeners await the arrival of The Cook's Garden catalogue, looking forward to reading about new seed varieties as well as reliable classics. Successfully growing vegetables, herbs, and flowers is just part of any gardening challenge, but what do you do once they are harvested? Ellen Ogder's recipes are one of the most delightful aspects of The Cooks Garden catalogue. As Deborah Madison, bestselling author of Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone and Local Flavors writes in her foreword: "These recipes, which are entirely guided by the garden and choice of seeds that grow in it, bridge the gap between a dream on a page promised by a seed packet and how the seeds can be used in the kitchen." Ellen's recipes are simple yet elegant and speak of freshness whether you harvest ingredients from your own garden or select them at your local store -- flavorful soups such as Zesty Lemon Cucumber Soup and Brilliant Butternut Bisque, salad combinations such as Arugula and Roasted Pear Salad, and Leaf Peeper's Carrot and Red Cabbage Salad, main courses such as Savory Vegetables in Polenta Crust or Herbed Chicken with Cider Sauce. Too many tomatoes or pears? Ellen offers ideas for preserving the bounty of any garden. Illustrated with full-color woodcuts by Caldecott winner Mary Azarian and packed with topics from Ellen's favorite culinary herbs to favorite autumn vegetables, From The Cook's Garden offers a yearround garden of culinary delights.

My husband and I have been customers of the Cook's Garden seed catalog for over a decade. We might be an example of your worst nightmare, or wildest dream--we're foodies who became so fanatical about using only the best, freshest, in-season, organic ingredients that we now have a 10-acre organic farm where we do market gardening. We do all this so we can and do grow vegetables you see in this beautiful publication.Other than its high production values, what is so special about this book? It presents an extraodinarily wide variety of produce as delectable dinner-time treats. For me, it gives depth to my already broad repertoire of veggie dishes. As an added bonus, I can give this cookbook to our friends and family who are reluctant to try cardoons or don't know that beets and chard come in a rainbow of colors. Suddenly, it's OK to give them strange veggies, because they know what to do with them. For those of you who don't know the joy of strolling through your own kitchen garden to decide what's for dinner, you can now stroll with confidence through the trendiest green grocer or farmers market, pick up what ever is freshest, and in season, and head home knowing you can find a delightful way to prepare and enjoy your find. We've tried several of the recipes. They're yummy! All are inspiring. And if you decide to try growing your own, remember there are those who farm many acres that started with a single grow box for fresh salad greens on the deck of their townhouse. This makes eating your vegetables a joy!

Also included in the new edition is information on the use of oak barrels. Unlike other winemaking manuals, this is devoted entirely to wine made with grapes instead of fruit wines.

it is not, in fact, for most "focused beginners"

First I want to clarify that if you're actually a serious experienced wine maker and want to learn all the ins and outs of perfecting the wines you hand crushed from your private orchard then this is in fact a good book. My beef is that it claims to be for "focused beginners" and it is way too advanced for that.
I was already quite familiar with the similar process of beer brewing so I had a leg up on most people but I still had to read through advanced processes and a sea of chemical terminology hoping they'd be defined and make sense later.
What makes this book poor for newcomers is that it tends to dive straight into specifics without taking a step back and explaining basics like what is going on or why.
What you can expect from this book is more of a reference manual of tips and tricks for perfecting your processes - not book that broadens your general understanding or appreciation of wine.

good info but sometimes unclear

I bought this book b/c I expect to start doing my own winemaking. This
book has a lot of good info and is very informative.
This book approaches the topic from two angles.
1. You'll be making wine from grapes
2. You'll be making wine from kits/concentrates
Now the problem isn't that it covers both topics, but that I was sometimes
unsure which angle the author was coming from.
For example, he talks about various procedures used in the wine making
process. But I was often unsure whether some procedure would only be done
if you were making wine from kits, or if you followed only when making wine from grapes.
So from a beginner's stand-point, reading this book didn't always make sense.
I suppose it will after I start making my own wine, but for a non-experienced beginner, I felt like some clarification needed to be
made as to which steps were followed in each method (grapes or kits).
I think another reviewer used the word "tangled". I kind of have to
agree b/c it wasn't always clear which method the author was referring
to.

I added this book to my growing wine making reference collection. As an amateur, I am busy gathering additional knowledge as I hone my winemaking skills. I used the "Raspberry Liquor" recipe to spruce up a batch of very dry and unsweetened Raspberry wine for my annual holiday wine creation. Good dry semi-sweet result.
