Product Description
Building on the astonishing success of The Power of Now, Eckhart Tolle presents readers with an honest look at the current state of humanity: He implores us to see and accept that this state, which is based on an erroneous identification with the egoic mind, is one of dangerous insanity. Tolle tells us there is good news, however. There is an alternative to this potentially dire situation. Humanity now, perhaps more than in any previous time, has an opportunity to create a new, saner, more loving world. This will involve a radical inner leap from the current egoic consciousness to an entirely new one. In illuminating the nature of this shift in consciousness, Tolle describes in detail how our current ego-based state of consciousness operates. Then gently, and in very practical terms, he leads us into this new consciousness. We will come to experience who we truly are—which is something infinitely greater than anything we currently think we are—and learn to live and breathe freely.

Date: 2008-11-21
This moving and transformational books offers real-life, concrete solutions to managing the stress of modern living. Where traditional therapy ends (understanding the "why" behind our misery) Mr. Tolle's book and mindfulness begin, by teaching the "how". How to find meaning in the present moment. How to stop looking for happiness in external things. How to learn to appreciate the true self and live a life of intention and kindness. Mr. Tolle gives the reader a wonderful introduction to Buddhist and mindfulness principals, and he also shows how all the major religions are more alike than they are different. His book is an inclusive, welcoming, and loving invitation to change the lens through which you see yourself and life. Highly recommended.

Tolle, supposedly a humble person, considers himself enlightened enough to tell everyone else how to be enlightened. He even says that if the Buddha didn't agree with him, Buddha would be wrong.
There is no evidence in the book that Tolle is enlightened at all. I studied and learned all this stuff back in the late 70s and the 80s; Tolle is merely throwing up a mish-mash of Buddhist-New Age thinking that he swallowed years ago.
It's sad that people think this spiritual wisdom when, in fact, it's full of inherent contradictions and self-refuting statements.
Tolle makes an amazing statement when he says that "at the heart of the new consciousness lies the transcendence of thought, the newfound ability of rising above thought" and we will no longer "derive [your] identity" from the "incessant stream of thinking."
And yet, what is this but a thought?! What is this whole book, but words and thinking? He also downgrades words to mere sounds, but of course, his book is in words!
Go figure!
Tolle needs to go back to the drawing board and get basic logic right before he claims to be enlightened.

Although it calls upon thought to counteract thinking (an oxymoron), it really helps in bringing the mind into present reality. It's a book I will read again (or portions of it) whenever my mind starts to take me into a negative pattern. Highly recommended.

One of the best books I have ever read that really helps me to understand the world around me and ultimately myself. I keep it handy to refer to on a regular basis, though I confess I have been back-sliding the past few weeks and the anxiety is returning. The real gift of this book is that it puts everything in perspective. That relieves the anxiousness that so seems to pervade our world which leads to wrong perceptions, violence, stupidity, etc. I have given the book as gifts to 3 people so far.
Thank you

A very special and unique book on development

I have read the other reviews below mine and I understand that Wilber has shortcomings. On the other hand, I also think he has much strength and that this particular book is incredible for a variety of reasons.
First, I think his presentation of transpersonal development is a great attempt at a synthesis of many schools of thought and his overall model for such a cycle is realistic. While some of the correspondences between disparate models might be inaccurate in the particulars, there are enough correlations that it is reasonable to take this work as a good starting point for a more complete synthesis.
Second, I loved the way Wilber explained what it must be like to be an infant or small child. He described the experience of different stages of development so well; I couldn't put the book down and read these sections over and over again.
Third, I liked the way Wilber positioned human development as part of a larger evolution. I believe that he is correct in his general ideas and he presents a hopeful picture of the future of humanity.
Overall, I think this is a very interesting read and complimentary to most of the good standard material that is already out there on development. It doesn't read like a text, it is much more engaging and thought provoking. I really appreciated this approach. The book is also dense; he packs a lot of useful information in a short space without repeating himself as much as he does in some other books.
I did not love the preface, but once I got into the core of the book I was very pleasantly surprised. You can get this volume for as little as $5.00 used. I have bought copies for my friends because I think it is especially good for parents, teachers and others who need to understand the different lines and stages of development from the INSIDE. It is good stuff don't be discouraged away from this book because it isn't perfect in every respect.

This is a book about human evolution and spirit involution. Wilber painstakenly reviews the stages of growth from the Pleromatic stages up through the Subtle, Causal then finally Non-dual. The Atman Project is regarded as one of the core which upon which Wilber's later and more complex books are based. This is an outstanding work and now my second favorite Wilber book after Eye to Eye.

I'll admit it straight out: I'm a Wilber fan. After thirty years of philosophical study and spiritual practice, I have only begun to read his work in the past year, but I find that it helps me synthesize many of the disparate thought currents I have studied with each other and with my own experience over thirty years of meditative practice. True, you have to be skeptical of anyone's ability to even read, much less thoroughly understand, all of the farflung disciplines that Wilber cites and purports to synthesize in his work. And in the (many) areas he cites of which I have little or no personal knowledge, it's pretty hard to know whether he's doing a complete or accurate job of analyzing them. But in those areas I do know something about, I have found his work to be as accurate, as luminous and as brilliant as anything I have read. For example, I think he does a better job of summarizing the importance and weaknesses of the work of Immanuel Kant than Arthur Schopenhauer did, and he didn't do such a bad job. His descriptions of meditative states are congruent with my own experiences and with the described experiences of the many writers on that subject with which I am familiar. So he has earned so far a high degree of credibility with me. The Atman Project attempts to integrate the work of developmental psychology with pre-egoic, pre-rational structures of consciousness with the experience of the mystical traditions with post-egoic, post-rational structures, to form a picture of how the individual evolves from structure to structure "up" the hierarchy, or "holarchy" in Wilber language, of these stages. There is a discussion of how "Spirit" "involves" itself downward through these structures and creates the imperative to evolve back up through them to Self-realization. This book was an early work of Wilber's, and though seminal to his thinking, in many ways does not accurately (or at least completely) reflect his current thought system. He states as much himself in later works. I therefore do not recommend it as an introduction to Wilber, but would instead recommend a later work, such as "A Brief History of Everything" or perhaps "The Essential Ken Wilber" for that purpose. And that is why I only give it three stars instead of the five stars I would give to the other six Wilber works I have read so far. However, the more committed Wilber student will find this book helpful in understanding Wilber's notion of how the individual negotiates its way along the "spectrum of consciousness" (though I think a better and more complete explanation can be found in "The Eye of Spirit") and, armed with some understanding of Wilber's more recent writings, perhaps will be less likely to mistake this for being a comprehensive treatment of even this part of his thought. I recommend it for that purpose.

....and an interesting summing up of many schools of thought. However, a key problem with the book and with most transpersonal models is what I think of as their verticality worship: higher, better, brighter. But so much of life--and in this I include spiritual life--occurs in the valleys, in the shadows and the messiness and the confusion of life, not in the middle of straight paths that hike up metaphysical mountainsides. I regard the notion that one can achieve blessedness through reading and hard inner work inflated, and I think the Zen masters so often quoted by integral folks would too. --Anyway, Wilber is quite readable and interesting.

"The Atman Project" is the central Wilber's book, the fount ( with the possible exception of "The Spectrum of Consciousness" ) of all his later speculations which try to dovetail all & everything, from biological evolution ( only sketched ) to socio-cultural models & spiritual Weltanschauungen into a single, all- encompassing pattern. Since my opinion is that such an endeavor ( in effect, the whole book is an effort to resolve the ultimate question,:" What is the meaning and purpose of ( human ) life ?" ) is doomed from the outset ( "The Tao that can be told of is not the eternal Tao" ), I'll just adumbrate a few points of this book, without going into nuances & detail which would take us too far.1. In essence, Wilber's "The Atman Project" is a book whose central message is that the meaning & purpose of life is "evolution" of consciousness ( rather fuzzily defined, probably under the influence of Neotheosophical writers/sages like Sri Aurobindo ), culminating in non-dual recognition of oneness of one's being with the eternal Ground of all ( Boehme's Ungrund/Abyss, Advaita's Brahman, Vajrayana's Dharmakaya, Eckhart's Godhead/Gottheit etc. ) In short, you got a clear message: the pinnacle of humanity are Zen patriarchs, Jiddu Krishnamurti or Ramana Maharshi. Shakespeare, Bach or Einstein are still schoolboys. Evidently, such a worldview unabashedly puts the author's pro-mystical bias as *the* key to the "riddle of existence". More, even "spiritually" or religiously minded people could hardly accept that the ground of the theophanies & the source of prophetic revelations, i.e. "God", is, at best, just a passive object of quietist meditative practice of rather passive contemplatives. The Biblical or Koranic God is reduced to an anemic yantra or mumbo-jumboid mantra. 2. Wilber's psychology is a curious blend. Essentially, he assimilated Freudian "insights" ( now heavily questioned ), put them within partially Jungian framework ( his chief reference is Neumann's "The Origin and History of Consciousness", whose singular terminology he amply (mis)uses ( pleromatic self, uroboric self,..))& subsumed under Vajrayana/Tibetan idealist monism. Admittedly- although both pillars of Atman project share the same trait: the absence of genuine levels of selfhood, as exemplified in the indestructible "I" ( Assagioli's Psychosynthesis ), spiritual seed ( Valentinian Gnosticism ), jiva ( Hindu Tantra ), "the naked isolated self" ( Gerda Walther , Psychic Being ( Aurobindo )- that very consistency makes the entire "Atman Project" inconsistent. For, if nothing transpersonal, but still individual, evolves, we are again back on Hegel's evolving Spirit from "Phenomenology of Spirit", "enriched" ( better, fused into perfect confusion ) by Vajrayana Buddhist doctrine. Well, yoy can't get both evolution and illusory nature of reality. 3. At the end, just a few remarks: a) Wilber consistently misreads various "perennial philosophies". For instance, his tables of correspondences at the end of the book are sad examples of ignorance ( Kabbalah's Binah and Hokmah as "spiritial" equivalents of Nirvikalpa Samadhi, plus other numerous bizarre attributions ). b) his obsessive sqabble re pre-trans fallacy is completely redundant- an echo of Freud/Jung disagreements & a few humanistic psychologists' fixations. c) conceptually, there is virtually nothing new cognitive-wise in this book. Whilst other researchers, from Stapp to Stuart Hameroff, try, stumblingly, to come to a new definition of consciousness, Wilber self-congratulatorily rehashes old dogmas & antiaquated concepts. d) considering that Freud's edifice is rapidly falling apart, Wilber's "pre" phase would probably follow the same way.

Product Description
Is your child involved with drugs? Adolescent drug abuse and chemical dependency can happen to any teenager, whatever their drug education, economic level, neighborhood, school, or church attendance. It can happen whether parents are married or divorced and regardless of how much they know about effective parenting. Adolescents are aware of potential dangers when they use drugs or binge on alcohol, but they think they are invincible and will escape the dangers. The average age when teens start drinking is 13; for marijuana experimentation it is 14. Parents are often the last to know about their children's involvement with alcohol or drugs. Chemical abusers do whatever they can to conceal their use. Families can rationalize the behaviors, particularly in adolescence, as being caused by something other than chemicals. Is the defiance part of a normal separation from parents? Due to a breakup with a girlfriend? Just adolescent hormones kicking in? Adolescent Drug and Alcohol Abuse offers parents clear information, support, and guidance: - Understand the disease model of drug abuse, and that it's not your fault
- Overcome family confusion, denial, and excuses to get your child the help he needs
- Find allies in the community to help your child feel the appropriate consequences of his actions
- Know what to look for in chemical assessment facilities
- See what kind of help can be given your child in treatment
- Gain serenity and happiness for yourself, apart from the outcome of your child's drug abuse or dependency
- Listen to the voices of dozens of parents and recovering teens and learn that you are not alone in how this problem profoundly affects your family
Author Nikki Babbit has counseled thousands of parents and teens about drug and alcohol abuse and dependency. Her message, and the message of the families whose stories fill this book, is one of encouragement and hope for the future.

This book is replete with good quality advice and information, The short personal anecdotes compliment the central narrative convincingly, rather than as mere literary frills. It deals with the problem from both the drug user's perspective and importantly also from that of the family. Often overlooked in the whole troubling saga is the need for the family to continue functioning even without the presence of the drug abuser. The book is strong in this area and many parents will nod their heads in agreement with its points. All in all a very useful guide.

In a nutshell, this book was one of the elements that SAVED MY SON'S LIFE!! If I hadn't read about the stages of addiction (easily described and organized within the book for quick intervention)I wouldn't have realized how serious a situation he was in already. There he was, crashing through the wall to the final stage (despair/suicidal)of addiction and, because he had woven such a web of chaos (balls in the air for me to keep busy catching)I was totally missing the desperate truth, that he was going to die if he wasn't stopped! If I hadn't reacted quickly I truly know he would not be here today.Babbit describes the ways addicts and abusers foil our best efforts to find out what they're up to. Our kids are experts at manipulation, and will go to great lengths to "protect" their addictions. They distract us from our instincts, avoid our attention, and unfortunately can plummet downward in a deathly spiral, under our very noses. Babbit describes ALL THE POPULAR DRUGS, the corresponding paraphernalia that can identify each one's use, and the symptoms displayed by someone using them. YOU WILL BE SHOCKED as you read the myriad of ways our children have found to get high! Have you ever grabbed a can of whipped cream out of the fridge only to find it's gone flat?? (they "huff" the gas out of the can!)...some even unscrew the gas cap and huff gas fumes right out of your car (keep a locking cap on yours!) Nikki Babbit's well written, non-judgemental book is an ESSENTIAL primer for Parents of substance and alcohol abusing teenagers!! This is NO-NONSENSE, "IN YOUR FACE" information, effectively organized for quick reference to deal with your individual situation (stage of chaos) quickly! I am ordering several copies now to distribute to those is immediate need, and to display while speaking at parent's groups/community outreach, etc. Sometimes the despair and pain we parents go through is best channeled back into the world by sharing a story or insight or knowledge. Once you've "interrupted" their progression and gotten them help, your kids basically have a long process to recovery and have to work their programs on their own. If parents then try to channel their pain and worry back into community involvement it helps keep you a little more sane and helps the effort to reduce the distribution of drugs. God bless, and good luck to you!

I have recommended this book to parents in our school system that I know need it. The problem is the kids continue to manipulate them and lie about their drug use. This book is a life saver! It takes you through the initial assessment of the problem, to teaching you how to live with it. It is easily readable and so much of it applied directly to our situation.

4 out of 4 customers found this reveiw helpful
I can't say enough for this book! It was clear, easy reading that helped me to understand what it means to be an addict. I have recommended it to other family members who are dealing with just this problem. It has been hard watching them struggle with this problem. I truly believe that they can begin to empower themselves and help their addicted adolescent if they read this book. I think that they could eliminate a lot of the misery that they go through by learning about their son/daughter's addiction and how it effects all family members. I learned about the role I play as an extended family member and how not to be an enabler. I recommend this book not only to parents, but to grandparents, aunts, and uncles. This is the most important book they will read to learn how not to enable their loved one to continue their addiction. The resources are valuable to those who don't know where to turn for help in dealing with addiction. The author, Nikki Babbit, not only has professional experience and training in working with adolescence and families; she, also, is the mother of a recovering son. I would highly recommend this book to all parents, not just those who are dealing with a teenage addict, because it will help you to be aware of and spot the signs of drug abuse before it becomes a problem in your family. Like the book says, it can happen in any family. Once again, BUY and READ this book! You will be thankful you did.

Babbit Shows Parents How To Know A New Happiness
Rating (4)
Date: 2000-09-05
4 out of 4 customers found this reveiw helpful
Dr. Babbit's book for parents with children who have a problem with alcohol and drugs is accessible and comprehensive, covering the disease concept of addiction, nature of assessments and treatment for children, and tools for personal recovery for parents. The book's appendices provide an excellent overview of descriptions of drugs and their effects, along with a guide on resources for further reading. Babbit brings to life this roller coaster ride parents experience from having children who abuse alcohol and drugs by providing the voices of parents who have gone through it. Information is always essential for recovery, but the private hell parents experience often entails isolation, guilt, and despair. And there is nothing more powerful than identifying with others who have rode that same roller coaster-a crucial step for parents' own recovery in gaining the awareness that they are not alone with and not unique in their feelings. But why this book is a must for parents with or without children abusing alcohol/drugs is Babbit's insistence on parents taking care of themselves. This recurrent theme of taking care of yourself at the end of each chapter is the constant reminder needed to parents that getting off the seemingly unstoppable, uncontrollable roller coaster is possible. Babbit's book is empowering to and breaths hope for parents in knowing a new freedom and a new happiness.

All About Attention Deficit Disorder should be given out in doctor's offices along with the diagnosis!
It's an excellent and easy to read resource for parents, teachers, and caregivers of any child who has ADD/ADHD characteristics. This book also includes fantastic information for adults who maybe didn't have the "label" as a child but can recognize the symptoms in themselves or a parent who can see the symptoms in themselves now that their child has a label.
I am a special education teacher, not a medical doctor, so I am not allowed to give out any medical or medication advice to parents in school based meetings.
This is the information I would share at those meetings if I could. The straightforward information in clear to understand language with a sense of humor to go with it is a must read!
I also highly recommend adding 1,2,3 Magic to your cart. It's the behavioral "instructional" manual that all children should have tied to their ankle when they come out of the womb. It's an especially helpful read with ADHD and other special needs children with a mental age of at least 2 years but it's a system that works with children of all ages.

This book isn't meant to replace a visit to your family physician, but to educate and inform parents so they can make the right decision. If your child has been diagnosed with ADD, this book will help you get a better handle on the disorder, help you understand what your child is going through, and help you help your doctor properly treat your child. If you suspect your child has ADD, but aren't ready to take your child to the doctor, this is a good first-step. Get All About Attention Deficit Disorder, read it, and if you feel your child meets the criteria for ADD, contact your family physician for an appointment.

Dr. Phelan uses real life examples to illustrate his didactic narrative. He explains concepts clearly and cuts quickly to the heart of important issues. I particularly enjoyed his discussion of the process getting an evaluation for AD/HD. He advocates a thorough, systematic approach to diagnosis. He explains how to make sure that the professionals have covered all of the bases. He discusses how AD/HD can affect both adults and children. However, he tends to put more emphasis or child and adolescent issues. Dr. Phelan does not pull punches or sugar-coat the issues. He makes it clear that AD/HD can make life challenging for individual and family. This directness is both the strength and weakness of this tape (and book.) The first couple of chapters tend to emphasize the difficulties. You have to wait a while before you get to the parts that give you some hope. The first couple of chapters might have you thinking about trading your child in for a non-defective model. But stick it out--by the end of the book you will have a clearer idea of the steps you can take to resolve difficulties. I am pleased that this book is available in an audiocassette version. Many families affected by AD/HD are already spread too thin. They may not have the time or the attention span to sit down and read an entire book. This particular audiocassette was produced in a professional manner. Dr. Phelan reads didactic material and actors dramatize family anecdotes. This breaks up any monotony and makes for an enjoyable listening experience.

Now in a newly updated edition, Thomas Phelan's All About Attention Deficit Disorder continues to be one of the most "reader friendly" introductions and explanations for parents, teachers and care-givers of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Phelan covers symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment for ADD children and adults. Highly recommended for personal, professional, school and community library collections, All About Attention Deficit Disorder will provide information, tools, and emotional support needed by anyone dealing with a loved one, student, or patient with this difficult, biologically based, psychologically impacting disorder.

What you begin to notice when reading this book is the constant reference to a particular website, which has the same name as the title. And at this site you can BUY all the ancient remedies touched on in the book. This book is an extended pitch for the website, folks. Please, look elsewhere.

Ancient Herbs, Modern Medicine should be read not only by lay people who are interested in alternative methods of treatment but also by professionals in the field of medicine. It explains very clearly the theories of traditional Chineese medicine and also gives examples of how this ancient system can be succesfully used in combination with alopathic-so called "modern medicine".Nancy Deville has a rare quality to explain very clearly even the very difficult questions. Therefore also the non-native English reader will definitely not only understand but also enjoy and profit from the book.
