Product Description
What in American society has changed so dramatically that nearly 60 percent of us are now overweight, plunging the nation into what the surgeon general calls an "epidemic of obesity"? Greg Critser engages every aspect of American life - class, politics, culture, and economics - to show how we have made ourselves the second fattest people on the planet (after South Sea Islanders).
Fat Land highlights the groundbreaking research that implicates cheap fats and sugars as the alarming new metabolic factor making our calories stick and shows how and why children are too often the chief metabolic victims of such foods. No one else writing on fat America takes as hard a line as Critser on the institutionalized lies we've been telling ourselves about how much we can eat and how little we can exercise. His expose of the Los Angeles schools' opening of the nutritional floodgates in the lunchroom and his examination of the political and cultural forces that have set the bar on American fitness low and then lower, are both discerning reporting and impassioned wake-up calls.
Disarmingly funny, Fat Land leaves no diet book - including Dr. Atkins's - unturned. Fashions, both leisure and street, and American-style religion are subject to Critser's gimlet eye as well. Memorably, Fat Land takes on baby-boomer parenting shibboleths - that young children won't eat past the point of being full and that the dinner table isn't the place to talk about food rules - and gives advice many families will use to lose.
Critser's brilliantly drawn futuristic portrait of a Fat America just around the corner and his all too contemporary foray into the diabetes ward of a major children's hospital make Fat Land a chilling but brilliantly rendered portrait of the cost in human lives - many of them very young lives - of America's obesity epidemic.

Fat Land is an interesting introduction to the topic of obesity as a public-health issue. The book, however, is very uneven and the author has no promising solutions.
At its best, Fat Land is an absorbing look at a critical issue that much of the public refuses to face. The author, Greg Critser, can make esoteric government decisions seem interesting. Some of his anecdotes - such as one about the 698-pound rap star Big Pun - are fascinating. I doubt that many people will walk away from Fat Land totally dissatisfied. At the very least, the book forces you to think about how much you're eating and how little you exercise.
Unfortunately, Fat Land is good only in places. I thought that most of the engaging material was in Chapters 1-4. Chapter 5 descends into babble about how poor people enjoy living in the "cocoon of obesity" (p. 112); this is especially disappointing because Critser criticizes others for just such flimsy thinking. Chapter 6, on the medical impact of obesity, was too technical for my taste. Chapter 7 offers some unoriginal solutions.
At his worst, Critser seems immune to nuance. American corporations are one-dimensional villains: "...the soft drink industry alone spends upward of $600 million annually to promote its trash..." (p. 173); "...these reversals serve notice to parents that the snack food industry will stoop to anything to protect its interests in maintaining their child's expanding belly, despites its medical consequences..." (p. 174). Isn't it possible that business could be part of the solution? Private companies control our food supply; I think, therefore, that we must encourage these businesses to be our partners - and not our adversaries - in promoting public health. One needs to think only of the success of organic produce to realize that there is a market for some healthy foods.
As many Amazon reviewers point out, a sense of gloom pervades Fat Land; there are no easy ways out of this mess. To Critser, government action is the panacea. Critser's answers to the problem include more P.E. classes, a national fat tax, and the return of 1930s New Deal agencies such as the Community Areas Foundation. I don't find these ideas to be very innovative; nor do they seem sufficiently promising to end the obesity crisis. Schools struggle to teach basic math and science, many people feel that taxes are sufficiently high at present, and government agencies often achieve mixed results. Critser's suggestions, moreover, focus on childhood obesity; he has little to say about how obese adults can improve their health.
In the end, unless we are willing to ban fatty food outright, personal responsibility must play some role in the solution. It's hard to admit it, but Big Macs, extra-large fries, and Big Gulps are popular because a lot of people prefer food that is terrible for us. Critser gives very little attention to personal responsibility, except to scoff that one conservative "...likes to sound the personal-responsibility trumpet..." (page xv).
Fat Land, in summary, is unlikely to bore you. But you will walk with a sense of despair about our declining national health.

As a dietitian, this book fascinates me not only due to the food/nutrition overview of the causes/etiology of obesity, but also the whole story behind the food production in the US. The book provides a historical overview of how high fructose corny syrup became popular as well as speculation on this obesity issue in the US/world. I loved it!

This book examines some of the various factors behind the current obesity epidemic in the United States. Critser, who formerly indulged in junk food himself, came to the realization one day that he was fat. He determined to do something about it, and put himself on a strict diet and fitness plan to get back in shape. Along the way, he also decided to investigate not only how he had managed to put on so much weight, but also how his neighbors and their kids had managed to become some of the fattest people on the planet.
Critser puts much of the blame on corn syrup and palm oil, two ingredients which have made it possible to supply more calories than ever at lower cost. Because of the low cost of these ingredients, the food industry, particularly those companies producing snacks, desserts, and fast foods, have been able to keep costs and prices low, within the budget of even the poorest of the poor. Indeed, as Critser points out, junk food and fast food is priced so low, it may be the only food poor people can afford to buy, which contributes to inordinate proportion of obesity amongst the country's lowest economic segments. Critser also discusses factors leading to less activity for the young, such as decreased hours for physical education instruction in school, and a physical education curriculum that focuses on recognizing the already fit and physically gifted rather than helping the average or below average kid.
Overall, the book is an interesting excursus into the causes of obesity in the modern American diet. While Critser does an admirable job of examining political decisions, marketing maneuvers, parenting styles, and technological factors behind the rise of obesity in America, there are still other topics he doesn't include in this book, such as anti-pedestrian development policies and cheap gas. (In countries where gas is much more expensive, people ride bikes and walk rather than drive cars, burning more calories than carbons.) And even if phys ed programs are required every day of the week for school children, they may not make a dent in the obesity epidemic unless they focus on developing lifelong fitness habits rather than team sport skills or simple physical activities popular with children. Nevertheless, the book is well worth reading for understanding why we are so fat as a nation and how we can begin to address the problem.

The New Cultural Obesity
Rating (4)
Date: 2007-09-12
When I returned from the Peace Corps in Africa to the US the first thing that struck me was how heavy people were. I did not return from a country suffering from famine, the people there were mostly in excellent shape considering their situation and it was the first time I had really noticed with a new perspective how heavy Americans were. This struck again when I had spent some time hiking in the west and returned to the mid west to see the inactive people away from the trails of the national parks were very overweight.
In Greg Critser's book I think the only thing that was not well explained was this problem of sedentary lifestyle. He does an excellent job otherwise in explaining the politics and culture that have created America's obesity epidemic. This book has changed my eating habits and brought an awareness of the problem of convenience foods, high fructose corn syrup, and fast food culture to me by his explanation of how the most readily available inexpensive foods are also the cause of obesity and much of the nation's health problems.
This is an excellent book and will probably change your outlook on food and eating for the better.

Britten writes her dramatic story to get to the fundamental conclusion that we make the life we want.
Her method is fantastic, her story quite tragic. My hat to her.
What I found most interesting was her concepts of what takes energy from you and what gives you energy. Not necesary the opposite.
This book is fanstatic for coaches and leaders who want to bring out the best in people, as well as for those who want to learn more about how to become the best us.
Her life story could be a whole book in itself. Her method another, different one. I think that her story distracted from her method.

While, the concept of "fear" and how it drives us unconsciously is an excellent channel of examination, I was very disappointed in the book.
Based on reading this book and discussions with numerous coaches recently, I believe lifestyle coaching is seriously out of date and does not do a service to individuals when the main focus is on the spiritual aspect of a person's life. Life has become exceptionally unpredictable and the world complex. You cannot tell me that someone who gets cancer got cancer because of a hidden fear or that a person who lost his job through layoff, had a fear of success.
I think it is time for the coaching world to examine the UN principles of exercising precaution and sustainability to get real about the complexity of approach it takes these days to earn a living, sustain and protect and care for one's health.
Motivational speaking or lectures on how to overcome fear are simply not sufficient anymore.

Product Description
What’s going on in a man’s mind? From their early days, every woman has struggled to understand why males behave the way they do. Even long-married women who think they understand men have only scratched the surface. Beneath a man’s rugged exterior is an even more rugged, unmapped terrain. What bestselling author Shaunti Feldhahn’s research reveals about the inner lives of men will open women’s eyes to what the men in their life—boyfriends, brothers, husbands, and sons—are really thinking and feeling. Men want to be understood, but they’re afraid to “freak out” the women they love by confessing what is happening inside their heads. This book will guide women in how to provide the loving support that modern men want and need.
The Truth About His Inner Life
He Desperately Wants You to Know
What's going on in there? Ever been totally confused by something your man has said or done? Want to understand his secret desires and fears, his daily battles that you know nothing about?
In a woman-to-woman conversation you’ll never forget, Shaunti Feldhahn takes you beneath the surface into the inner lives of men. This book is about the things we just don’t ‘get’ about guys. With findings from a groundbreaking national survey and personal interviews of over one thousand men, For Women Only is full of eye-opening revelations you need to not only understand the man in your life, but to support and love him in the way he needs to be loved. Grounded in biblical hope, you will discover how to love your man for who he really is—not who you think he is.
Story Behind the Book
I had no idea how clueless I was about men until I interviewed a bunch of them for my last novel. Initially, I just wanted a little insight so I could write my main (male) character. But pretty soon I found myself astonished, over and over again blurting out, “That’s what you’re thinking?” So I did more interviews. After the novel hit shelves, dozens of women told me they also had been astonished by what I included. Clearly I wasn’t the only one who needed more insight on this!
To lay the groundwork for this nonfiction book, I wrote out the half-dozen things from these interviews that had most surprised me—things that appeared to be universal to most men—that women desperately needed to know. I conducted a professional national survey of men to test my findings. Yep—the survey substantiated every single one. These findings are fascinating—and they have already changed my life and marriage. I can’t wait to share them!

The 4:8 Principle: The Secret to a Joy-Filled Life
After coaching hundreds of couples, I can tell you that For Women Only stands out as a book that can be a real "game-changer" in marriage. For decades it has been virutally impossible to find relationship literature that truly equipped women to be stronger wives. This book accomplishes that. The vast majority of relationship-oriented self-help books seemed to share the goal of molding men into women as a prerequisite for experiencing a successful marriage. This approach sold a lot of books, primarily to women, but didn't work so well for marriages overall.
In For Women Only, author Shaunti Feldhahn shares the truth about how most men process their world. I can verify this personally and by confirmation of my male clients who aggressively bought this book for their wives when it was released, understanding that the author had articulated precisely what they hoped their wife would know, but didn't quite grasp how to deliver the information to her.
What a perfect solution!
A woman completes the research and then writes a book for women to help them understand and consequently respond in wiser, more thoughtful ways to their husbands (and sons).
I also recommend the companion book, For Men Only: A Straightforward Guide to the Inner Lives of Womenand Love & Respect: The Love She Most Desires; The Respect He Desperately Needs
If you want to maximize the potential of your marriage, these three books are a must!

We saw this at a marriage conference...
Rating (5)
Date: 2008-11-04
Every year my husband and I attend a marriage conference from Family Life to help us to focus on any new issues that have arisen in the last year that we need to tend to away from distractions. As an avid reader, I am extremely guilty of breaking the bank at the resource center each year. Three years ago, my HUSBAND was the one who snagged this book and it's partner "For Men Only. I was truly shocked that he had chosen some books (first time ever I think). That spurred me on to read it as soon as the conference was over.
Needless to say, I had heard many of the subjects on a surface level in the conferences, and in many other books I have read over time, however this book digs so much deeper. I couldn't put this book down, but when the kids went to bed, would review certain areas that I just couldn't believe with my husband. What an eye-opener! I don't think it matters if you are a Christian or not, but I think that this book will definitely give you a better understanding of your husband or fiance.
I bought the cd version as well, so I could listen to it at work. The guys in my group laughed the first time I put 5 copies on my desk. So many co-workers have borrowed them and passed on the word (we're talking 30-40 women, and that's not counting the women who just bought the book because they couldn't get it away from another co-worker). The guys didn't laugh when the cd's hardly ever came back for more than a few hours. Women are desperate to understand their loved one and you don't find this information in the media. I didn't always agree with her suggestions, as they do not fit into our family life all of the time, but t's an insightful study.
Good luck and I hope it helps you to understand your husband or fiance better. My husband and I are pretty open and communicate well...most of the time. This just opened up our communication even more so. :D

I love this little book -- the color pictures on the inside cover are great for identifying stones, the author's method is simple and easy to learn, and her writing style is clear and positive in tone. I only wonder if a method this simple might not be detailed enough to provide accurate readings, but I have yet to put it to the test enough to judge. Nonetheless, I have not found many books on this subject, and none as enjoyable as this one! It would be well worth it for anyone interested to find a copy of this out-of-print gem! I started having panic attacks and anxiety back in 97. It was really scary stuff, and I though I was losing it. I really thought if was going crazy, but I was wrong. I went to about 10 doctors with my simptoms, and they all gave me Buspar or Xanax, some told me to sit down and breath deeply and realax, during the attack (and that helped too). But the real help came when I heard a radio commercial from Lucinda Basset advertising his tape program. I could not afford it back then, but I ordered the free intro tape. It was an inspiration to learn more about her.
I looked on the internet and found her book (this one) and bought it. Never was the same again. I started living without fear again. I was getting to the poing were I didn't even want to leave the house.
GET IT. GET IT. GET THIS BOOK.
Lucinda is a gift from heaven.
God bless her.

I ordered this book because it was recommended reading for her Attacking Anxiety and Depression Program. The book uses a lot of the techniques/ideas from the program. It's basically the program in condensed form. I would recommend this book to anyone who struggles with anxiety/panic attacks.

I was literally ABUSED when I called for the "free cd" she does not really offer. After asking for it to be sent to me so I could make an informed decision I was told by her salespeople, "I've told you everything thats on the cd, you do not need to recieve it". And then I was literally BULLIED into ordering the extrememly expensive program with no chance to think it over. Even when I later became angry about the hard sell & tried to cancel the order, the person I spoke to literally tried to force, refused & even DEMANDED, that I not cancel my order! Only when I finally gave up on politeness & literally screamed at the salesperson, "I said CANCEL THE GD ORDER"!! & then threatened to change my credit card info with my bank, did the person finally cancel the order. This woman uses extreme bullying techniques to push a wayyyy over priced questionable product, taking advantage of people already weakened by mental distress. She & her infomercial need to be investigated by the BBB and consumer watch dog groups!! As far as all these supposedly good "reviews" this woman's "program" is getting, I have to wonder, after my own experience, how many of these she wrote herself (or had her toadies write for her). BUYER BEWARE!!!!

This author was actually pretty screwed up before she wrote this, and she's better now. She tells about what she (and some support group members) did to overcome agoraphobia and anxiety. If it worked for her, it has to work for anyone. This is great in conjuction with Edmund J. Bourne's Anxiety and Phobia Workbook. The techniques she used are more detailed in his workbook. They actually work if you can master them.

this book is for women only - and does nothing to address the needs of men who grew up in violent alcoholic families. It even uses the words "SHE" and "HER" when descibing the victim or person seeking recovery.

While it's an important part of recovery to study the steps, to learn about the disease of alcoholism, and to be able to follow the directions and suggestions in books, what really helps me are the stories of people who have been there and experienced that. That's what I relate to.
This is a book full of stories of people who have grown up in an alcoholic home. At times reading it was like listening to my brother or sister's experience - it hits that close to home. But eventually, I found my story, and in that moment, I realized I wasn't alone. What a relief, what a gift, and, ultimately, that's what led to the miracle of recovery for me. If you're alone or suffering, buy this book and read it. You'll soon find that you're not alone and that together, we can all heal.

ACoA'ers who attend Al-Anon

This books takes an accurate and 'in depth' look at what it's like to grow up in an alcoholic/dysfunctional family. It gives a very good description of the feelings and characterisics of Adult Children of Alcoholics. I could identify with many of the stories. This book gave me hope. If you're like me, there aren't many active ACoA meetings in your area. I attended Al-anon because it was more active in my area, and I definitely needed some type of support group that focused on addiction, but at times I felt out of place. It wasn't until I found this book that I actually felt a part of the Al-Anon family. Until I found this book, I often felt like an outsider looking in because there were no longer many active alcoholics in my life, but I was still suffering from the effects of alcoholism. This book shares stories that looks at the many different facets of growing up in an alcoholic home. I think it's a 'must have' for all Adult Children of alcoholics. I can now vouch for the phrase "Al-anon is for Adult Children of Alcoholics."

this was a wonderful book,it was so painful to read ,but so real, with out these stories that validated my own pain of growing up in my own family...where i felt so alone and abandoned and so out of control, this book helped me see that if i didnt work this stuff out in my own life that i would live it out and recreate the same scene in my own life..out of my aloneness and abandonment issues i would put this on other people and have the same expectations of them as i did of my family of original and those needs would not be meet because i was not healthy enough to find someone that was available as only the inavailable was attractive to me ...as i was also looking for someone to rescue and caretake just as i had learnt in my family..or i would find someone to rescue me..this book stopped me enough to get honest, and as without anything in life there is no gain without pain ..what a book...what a journey..the truth does set you free.have the courage to read this book it is amazing...its not about blame its about recovery..
