Product Description
"This lucid study moves changing ideas about sex roles from the margins to the center of intellectual history. With superb insight and erudition Rosenberg discerns the connections between social science and feminism which replaced the ideal of 'true womanhood' with 'the new woman' at the turn of the 20th century. Besides brilliantly illuminating the personalities and ideas which led from one intellectual era to another, the book contributes groundbreaking research to the question of feminism's fate in the 1920s."-Nancy F. Cott "Weaving anecdote and analysis, Rosenberg shows how the women's experiences in academic and institutional settings influenced the direction and content of their theoretical work."-Kathryn Kish Sklar, The Wilson Quarterly

Product Description
This book will guide you from historic towns where cattle barons once vied with oil magnates, to expanses of prairie and desert where buffalo once roamed. Whether you're rafting down the Rio Grande, sampling chili in Terlingua, border-hopping between old El Paso and Juarez, or dancing in Turkey to Bob Will's music, this is what Texas is all about.

This is one of the few travel guides available for West Texas. It covers in detail Big Bend, Big Bend State Park, Alpine, Balmorea, Marfa, EL Paso and many other fine locations in West Texas. A must have for traveling anywhere south of Midland and West of San Antonio. Some of the accommodations and Restaurant choices need updating, a few addresses are just plain wrong and some area codes are outdated, but all in all this book is a help. Of interest the author does a good job recommending El Paisano hotel in Marfa, which is one of he great gems of accommodation in the region.

If and when you get the chance to escape to the wilds of West Texas, be sure to take Eric along. If things don't work out, take his book. It's almost as informative as he is. Better yet, you can put him down (which is something I can't do).

I didn't think there was anyplace in Texas worth stopping at until I visited the Big Bend. How this guy ever knew about John Madden's favorite restaurant in West Texas is one of the many things I liked about this book and give it a top recommendation. More on Mexico border towns would appeal to me (but that's not Texas, is it).

From Dryden to Pyote, and even down to Cuidad Acuna, Eric O'Keefe has covered "God's Country" as only a person who has spent a major portion of their life in the region can.

O'Keefe moved from Houston to Alpine, Texas during his formative high school years, and the detailed descriptions of this beautiful part of the Lone Star State reflect that intimate knowledge of the small towns, and hole-in-the-wall cafes that give West Texas it's special character.

O'keefe has since abandoned West Texas for the more chic atmosphere of Santa Fe, but don't hold that against him. He still knows where to buy beer in Sheffield.

If you are planning a visit, this is the guide you "Must Have".

Why there is no peace?
Rating (5)
Date: 2000-11-11

I was amazed at the lucidity and incisiveness with which this book addresses with the complex issue of violence, as well as presents an eclectic spectrum of means to deal with it. The surprising brevity of the work, for once, has helped me grasp coherently the exhaustive range of stimulants to the incitement of violence. That includes everything from individual human psychology as an engendering cause of international conflict and war, to structural and cultural incitements to violent socio-political behavior, both within and without countries. It is a pleasant reading experience that will not make one forgetful of the beginning by the time one will have reached the end. I could easily fathom the complex intermingling of biology, psychology, anthropology, sociology, political science, and other branches of study that all contribute to the causes of violence and its prevention.

The book goes on to explain the various roles of governments and the public in inciting and justifying war. Rectification of perceived injustice by communities, need to preserve national honor, windows of threat or opportunity in geopolitical calculations - all are attended plainly yet compellingly.

Brown explores concepts like balance of power, international collective security, arms control, and their historical, philosophical bases, in proceeding towards the conclusion envisioning a unique mix of morality and changes in political-economic structure as the final hope of a new world order.

Product Description

Does censorship of the press exist in the United States? For the past twenty-six years Project Censored has answered YES, producing its acclaimed yearbook, Censored.

In past years Censored has been instrumental in helping to push underreported stories into the mainstream. In the 1997 edition, Karl Grossman's article "Risking the World: Nuclear Proliferation in Space" led to 60 Minutes doing a national feature on the subject. Censored 1999 featured Monsanto's "terminator seed" project, which was subsequently discontinued because of negative publicity. Censored 2001 exposed the disasterous impact of the increasing privatization of the global water supply, a story that is rapidly becoming one of the major issues of the twenty-first century. We can expect more of the same vital and aggressive coverage from Censored 2004.

As always, Censored 2004 highlights the year's twenty-five most important underreported news stories, alerting readers to the deficiences in corporate media. Familiar sections like "Junk Food News" and "Dj Vu" figure once again. In addition, this year's edition includes a chapter on the public relations industry in the U.S. and its effect on the media. Robin Anderson, professor at Fordham University and Censored judge, will contribute a chapter on censorship in times of war. Censored 2004 also includes original essays by Norman Solomon and others. FAIR (Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting) adds a chapter on the monitoring of domestic censorship, and the International Index on Censorship will provide a chapter on international monitoring. Censored 2004 will include a resource guide and updates on independent media to help readers take part in grassroots efforts to strengthen the media and democracy movement.

More than three hundred-fifty thousand copies of previous editions of Censored are in print today.

Peter Phillips, director of Project Censored, is an associate professor of sociology at Sonoma State University. He frequently speaks on media censorship and various sociopolitical issues on radio and TV talk shows, including Talk of the Nation, Public Interest, World Radio Network, and Democ

An ongoing and urgent effort
Rating (4)

When Secretary of State Colin Powell addressed the United Nations Security Council on Feb. 5, 2003 seeking to justify invading Iraq, the UN's tapestry of Picasso's masterpiece Guernica -- arguably the world's most famous artistic treatment of the horrors of modern warfare, was covered with a drape. To date, no one has revealed who requested the move. But the blatant censorship of a powerful artistic depiction of the horrors of war sent a potent political message. Unlike most of the stories detailed in Censored, this one was accorded some small mention in the nation's press. But it aptly conveys the message of Project Censored: that the stories overlooked, ignored and sometimes suppressed by the mainstream, corporate-controlled major media are as effectively blocked as if suppressed by government fiat. For three decades, faculty and students at Sonoma State University have labored to produce Project Censored -- an annual compendium of important stories missed by most of the news media -- and to honor the squeaky wheels who did cover them. This is one more among their valiant efforts and well worth a read. Our democracy depends on a free press and these folks continue to do essential spadework.

Great compendium of news items that didn't make the News

This is a great compendium of some of the newsworthy items of the last few years you never heard or you wrote off as conspiracy theory. Inform yourself about the true state of our government and current events in the US and around the world. This is a good resource to get the story if you don't want to do a lot of digging on the alternative news sites. Compiled from reputable news journals and peer-reviewed, each news item is fairly brief but gives a good overview of the situation. Includes information about the reasons for the War in Iraq and touches on the foundation of the Project for a New America (PNAC), the USA PATRIOT Act, and lots more interesting tidbits. Also included are cartoons by Tom Tomorrow, the brilliant political cartoon satirist who I predict will one day be as popular a cartoonist as Gary Larsen and Scott Adams.

Often criticized for lack of editing, leftist leanings, etc., Project Censored has nevertheless been providing the public with the kind of muckracking journalism we so desperately need in this era of corporate journalism. Packed with stories, sources, links, and a wonderful appendix of alternative media venues, this book should not be overlooked. Perhaps the most important publication in journalism.

What a dreary annual affair

I noticed something funny about the stated criteria that the "Censored" people use for submissions to this annual blather-fest: to be considered as a "censored" feature, your submission has to have been published. So only published stories are eligible as proof of Amerikkkan "censorship." In reality, it's just those stories that the relevant media found to be either too loony, factually shaky, or just too ideologically driven to be suitable for publication in the major media outlets. So the New York Times won't run your story about "valuable lead mines in Kosovo are the secret reason NATO went to war against Serbia." Jeepers, these people are a half-stop removed from your typical smelly pants fascists and your Montana survivalists in terms of their level of sophistication.

Actually, on the subject of censorship generally, I am much less afraid of Ashcroft than I am of the trend in this country of strangling any expression that anyone deems to find offensive, and the guilty include people and organizations of both the left and the right.

Everybody Has An Agenda
Rating (3)
Date: 2004-05-02

14 out of 35 customers found this reveiw helpful

The group which puts out this series of books leans hard left, so the 25 stories all fit nicely with their view of the world. Some are legitimate, some would take a very slow news day to make any sort of splash, a few got all the coverage they deserved, a few are just before their time, and a few are pretty thin speculations that no self-respecting news paper or other outlet would touch. If you got a conservative group to come up with the stories, you would get the same level of legitimacy with 25 completely different issues. Better this year than a couple of the previous editions, but still a bit out there and still intellectually dishonest in its representation of its views. This is quite clearly 25 stories that fit the agenda of the group who wrote it, not just 25 stories that didn't get the coverage they deserved, a fact that makes them as culpable as the news outlets they criticize.
