Product Description
An exciting new series of study guides that lets each student design a course of study pitched to his or her individual needs and learning style Each year, more than one million U.S. high school students take one or more advanced placement (AP) exams, and, according to official projections, that number will continue to rise in the years ahead. That is because AP exams confer important benefits on those who do well on them. High AP scores are indispensable to gaining admission to most elite colleges. They provide students with a competitive edge when competing for grants and scholarships. And they allow students to bypass required university survey courses, saving on skyrocketing tuition fees. Designed to coincide perfectly with the most current AP exams, Five Steps to a 5 on the Advanced Placement Examinations guides contain several advanced features that set them above all competitors. Each guide is structured around an ingenious Five-Step Plan. The first step is to develop a study plan, the second builds knowledge, the third and fourth hone test-taking skills and strategies, and the fifth fosters the confidence students need to ace the tests. This flexible study tool is also tailored to three types of students. For the more structured student there is a "Month-by-Month" approach that follows the school year and a "Calendar Countdown" approach that begins with the new year. For students who leave studying to the last minute "Basic Training" covers the basics in just four weeks. Other outstanding features include: - Sample tests that closely simulate real exams
- Review material based on the contents of the most recent tests
- Icons highlighting important facts, vocabulary, and frequently-asked questions
- Boxed quotes offering advice from students who have aced the exams and from AP teachers and college professors
- Websites and links to valuable online test resources, along with author e-mail addresses for students with follow-up questions
- Authors who are either AP course instructors or exam developers

Absolutely AMAZING prep book. Difficult, complex concepts such as cellular respiration, and chemiosmosis are simplified, and the book is written in a conversational style. It is a good read, interesting, FUN.
Also, was researched very well, told me exactly what to study. It is supposed to be used a supplement to the AP Bio textbook ... but I didn't read more than 5 chapters in my 60 chapter book, sat down with this the Sunday before the AP test, and got a 5.

With efforts, 5 steps to a 5 does what it claims to do. That being said, students need to thoroughly go through this guide and go back and read the parts that they don't understand clearly in the textbook. This book is excellent if you're short on time (say, a week to two weeks to review for the AP Exam). The AP Exam does not include too much details (what Barron's would always do), so 5 steps to a 5 is great at generalizing the big picture. It also has exclamation marks whenever there are very important concepts to remember, and also offers where the essays would usually fall on. I used this book and got a 5 on the AP Bio exam, but I also read my textbook and used this book as a last minute review. The Cliffs AP Bio review book is excellent as well. I find their questions the closest to the actual test.

He says the book presents the information in an easy to understand and remember format. Now, we just have to see how he does on the test!

No kidding! This book is seriously the best out there. Trust me- I took the class and the test, and I got a five. It's very readable and actually pretty fun to read! I did some research on the author and he's a great guy- and this shows through his book! I seriously did not study beyond this book for any of the tests after I started using it- and I (am not kidding when I say that I) got 111% on about 85% of my tests in total- this figure is including the several ones beforehand- meaning that I was well above the class average- and typically thats not the case.
Trust me when I say that you do NOT need anything else than this book (regardless of what others say0- well, besides your text book. If you do what I did and you do ALL the homework in this class, than you are almost guaranteed a nice plump 5 on the test and an "A" in the class- remember how its weighted? Thats a 5.0 people!
The key features that you might want to be aware of: The end of each chapter has a very in depth, but none too long, summary. The strategies work well- especially the "bottom hour glass" ones. And... Fun to read! It really feels like the author.. his name escapes me... is speaking to you with a fun tone, rather than just a book making you sleep. Trust me here too- I know those books. Too well.

I purchased this book for a class and it was a HUGE disappointment. I love books, but they need to have substances. Sometimes we hear that we shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but this is a perfect example of how covers can tell us a whole lot about books. It looks like it was meant for someone in elementary school, not serious educators that are trying to invest their money wisely. Another tree goes down! The sacrifice!

It's a condense textbook basically ,covering everything you need to know about the textbook, although it shouldn't be anyone's substitute to the text, the study guide provides a good guide to what to know and expect on exams. It also offers more questions to practice and to familiarize yourself with, and that always helps.

Product Description
This concise, case-based text will help pre-service and practicing teachers prepare for the challenging California Reading Initiative Competency Assessment (RICA). Drs. Rossi and Schipper cover all domains, concepts, strategies and assessments required by RICA. The cases cover a wide variety of student profiles and grade-levels reflecting CA's school population, and include a variety of scenarios for whole classes, groups, and individual students. But the usefulness of this text goes well beyond RICA preparation; it's a terrific companion to any literacy methods text in teacher preparation courses at undergraduate and graduate levels. The real-life scenarios reflect the literacy learning situations teachers encounter in actual classrooms, and help teachers place their knowledge of reading methods and strategies into realistic contexts. All cases reflect research-based concepts and strategies covered in all major reading methods and diagnosis texts used in colleges and universities throughout the state of California.

This book was very helpful to my RICA preparation, but in conjuction with the Ready for RICA book. If you're using both, the approaches are slightly different, like the difference between the Clifs and the Barron's prep books for the CSET. Each had some merit, neither would be a good idea to be the single source for preparation. My essay portion was helped, however, by studying from this book, as it's suggested answers were different from the Ready for RICA.

I used this book in addition to Ready for RICA by James Zarillo. You MUST read the instruction pages, or the book will seem pointless. But if you read the instructions, you will get a lot from the book itself. There are sample case studies similiar to those on the RICA with all possible answers listed. There are also study tips to help prepare for the exam. This book was a core in my preparation for the RICA and I passed on the first try.

I am going to take the RICA in about a month. Many of my friends have already taken the test and said this book was helpful. The book is not intendend to be a sole preparation for the RICA. You need to have a knowledge of terminology and strategies to go along with this book. There are some helpful web sites and books for this purpose as well as any "Language and Literacy" courses you may be taking in your credential work. This book is to give you sample case studies such as the ones you will be required to write about on the real test. Keep this in mind when studying.

Product Description
Since the first edition appeared in 1999, the ISI college guide, Choosing the Right College: The Whole Truth about America's Top Schools, has served as an essential reference resource for prospective students and their parents. Unlike other college guides, which too often read like paraphrases of university public-relations brochures, Choosing the Right College is an independently researched and written volume that covers the things that matter most, such as core curricula, campus crime, student living arrangements, the quality of teaching and student advising, freshman orientation, good professors to seek out, and courses and departments to avoid. This, the 2004 edition, has been thoroughly revised and rewritten. It has also been expanded to include 120 of the nation's top private and public colleges and universities. As with previous editions, the editors provide candid assessments of the state of each school's academic curriculum, political atmosphere, and campus life. In this edition, students are also told which courses they can take at each school in order to provide themselves with a true core curriculum-a course of study that used to be required almost everywhere but now almost never is. This build-your-own-core feature helps make the 2004 edition more indispensable than ever for the student and parent seeking a genuine liberal arts education.

A must-have for conservative students
Rating (5)
Date: 2004-12-17
6 out of 9 customers found this reveiw helpful
Although it never says it outright, this book comes from a very conservative perspective. It reveals truths about schools that college admissions officers would never dream of telling you. If you want the inside story on a particular school, you need to buy this book.
I recently made the unfortunate decision of going to a college that I discovered was completely wrong for me. If this book had an entry for my current college, I probably would have never considered going here. I was stupid enough to believe some of the lies that admissions officers told me about my school--"Oh yes, this is a VERY conservative campus...", etc. The ISI book will give you pertinent information that administrators typically lie about, like (in my school, for example) insipid affirmative action programs, a dearth of conservatives on campus, and a general attitude of hostility towards anyone who's not a leftist.
As a conservative student stuck in a wretchedly liberal university, I urge you to get this book if you want to know the truth about liberalism on a particular campus. Don't make the same mistake I did.

We got this book for our daughter and it provided a completely unique point of view. There is just no competition when it comes to analyzing schools on the issue of political correctness. It was especially interesting to read the descriptions of the colleges our family had first-hand knowledge about--from 20 years ago. My, how things have changed at our old alma mater. This book helped me reflect on how my daughter is going to need to filter--i.e., test--some of the liberal thinking that she will undoubtedly encounter, wherever she goes. We were able to discuss the kinds of things that she might be asked to do or buy into. She's smart and can make up her own mind. I sincerely hope she chooses a school where diversity of opinion is truly respected so that she can focus on being educated rather than learning to say "the right thing" to appease liberal faculty. Harvard called her recently to ask if she had any questions about Harvard. She asked if a student ever got a lower grade because her political views were different from the prof's views. THe Harvard rep said, "no, not if you can cite facts, you know, not just state your opinions." That's a little chilling for a young person who wants to state their opinion and test different points of view! The Harvard rep added that Harvard had been getting that question a lot lately. Could it be that people are starting to question whether even hallowed Harvard is too focused on providing political indoctrination rather than a solid liberal arts education?! This book makes you think twice about some of our most prestigious institutions.

Uber-Conservative
Rating (2)
Date: 2004-06-22
4 out of 11 customers found this reveiw helpful
I bought this book thinking that it would be a good, in-depth look at some of the top schools in the country, but as I sat down to read it, I saw the reviews on the back cover. Famous conservatives have given it rave reviews, and that made me a little nervous about how much I would get out of the book. It's definitely in-depth, but it only reviews well-known, selective schools and more obscure Christian colleges. It's also very editorialized. In one entry, a sentence ends with the phrase, "for pete's sake." There are complaints from seemingly unhappy students about politicized departments, but they're only politicized if they lean left-ward. This book tends to hate Africana and Women's Studies programs. It kept complaining about how Stanford abandoned its Western Civ requirement for a world cultures, American cultures, and gender studies requirement, then quotes a student who says, "The General Education Requirement forces students to take some sort of feminist class." Well, call me crazy, but I'm reading that it's a world cultures, American cultures, AND gender studies requirement, not just gender studies. It also hates Wesleyan University for being a nudist camp and Georgetown University for not being Catholic enough to dislike for being Catholic. Reading about Georgetown (one of my top choices, now even higher up on my list after seeing how much this guide hates it) is just comical, talking about "pro-abortion" groups, making it sound like they sponsor "Yay for Abortion, Let's all get one!" rallies or something. If you're conservative, have a blast reading this, but if you're not, try the Fiske Guide or the Kaplan Unbiased Guide with Trent and Seppy. Those guides have helped me narrow things down a lot more, and they have more than double the colleges reviewed. Hope this was helpful!

I must admit being a skeptic about TQM as I have seen it applied in several organizations: much hot air, little actual work, no results. However, this little book has given me some hope that CQI can actually be implemented in one of the most difficults fields to manage, education. This book is a no-nonsense guide to implementing CQI techniques in the classroom. It will be helpful to teachers with a practical bias. This is not a general TQM book: it focuses on the very specific and difficult learning environment. Every example and activity will be found relevant to teaching. It is not either a book for teaching the tools and techniques of CQI to students; nevertheless, no student could possibly go through a course designed and taught with the tools the book describes, and leave unaware of CQI techniques. The book is divided in two main sections. The first describes "eleven steps" to achieve a functioning CQI classroom environment. The CQI environment is modeled as four separate systems: facilitator, learning, improvement and payment. Most of the chapters include self-evaluation instruments for the teacher, and training activities for the students. On the downside, I found some of the chapters a little naive. I would also have liked to see more examples related to higher education, my own field. The second section, the Appendix, is a beautifully summarized guide to several tools of quality management, presented in the context of education. One of the tools is actually a self-evaluation guide, that produces a "CQI teaching index". As a higher education teacher I find this book an easy to follow, concise guide to CQI in the classroom. The Appendix alone is worth the book; nowhere else have I found such a good summary of CQI techniques as applied to education. Some of the techniques described have really forced me to think about what I teach and why I teach it. I find very interesting the emphasis throughout the book about relevancy of course content, and the student's role as "workers". This is a book by someone who seems to have actually used the techniques and to believe in CQI. I would recommend it to individual teachers and to those who must manage them.
