I use this with my AP Students and it serves as a true basis for the entire course overall! My students have learned an extensive amount from the help of CliffsNotes. It provides you with everything you need to know for the test, and it gives you your own leeway to do what you will with all of the information given.
Buy this product! It is worth it

I'll be honest. I think I was well prepared for AP exam way before reading this book. I've had hardcore Honors English 2 to help prep me for the AP class.
I didn't use this book till the week before the exam. The multiple choice questions were nothing like the ones on the AP exam, which I thought were easier than the ones in the book. If you really want to do well on AP exam, just do the multiple choice and see what you missed. I scored low on each exam (missed 10 or so) and didnt grade myself on the essays.
The good parts of the book are the comprehensive review of glossary terms and the section on writing the essay. AP English is the easiest AP exam to prep for. You don't necessarily need the AP class. You just need to know literary terms and how to write concisely. Overall, 4 stars for getting me the 4 on the AP exam. For the most part, most people in my class got 4s and I dont necessarily think it has to do with the book, but I think if you need practice, this is a decent book.

I basically took the AP Lang exam using only this book to prepare, and I scored a 5. I did walk into it with pretty developed writing skills, but this book helped me understand and improve my literary analysis. I did about ten of the sample essays and one of the multiple choice sections in the practice tests. The student written essays are helpful; the high scoring ones give you a good idea of what the scorers are looking for.
The main thing to keep in mind on the AP Lang test is sounding intelligent is most important, even if your points are simple. As Oscar Wilde so eloquently put it, "In matters of great importance, style, not sincerity, is what really matters."

This book had a decent list of terms, although I've stumbled across better ones in books my friends owned. The main plus to it was detailed analysis of essays written by students under the exact same testing conditions. Although their examples of 8's and 9's seemed quite a bit higher than what my teacher accepted (and she's a tough grader), it was helpful to see how my writing stacked up. I scored a 4 on the exam, with this being my main study guide. Also, my teacher would pass copies out to the class for discussion a few times a year, meaning that she approved, I'm sure.

This book is ok for the beginner, but I should have bought something more like the Designers Guide to Color Series. First Color Harmony 2 is basic art class. Second the cd rom is not what I thought it would be. I was expecting something more like a paint palette where I could create, or mix my own colors and then have the software comeup with the complementary, split-complementary, analagous combinations etc. Instead I am limited to the 106 individual programmed colors. So I was really disappointed. And didn't think it was worth the price.

Best book on color combinations, must-have for desingers

This is the best book on color I have found. It is a must have for anyone who has ever been confused about matching colors and creating the right mood. Though I was already fairly confident working with color, this book helped me a great deal by letting me see a wide variety of color combinations together. The book begins by discussing the color wheel. This includes the facets of color such as hot, cold, light, dark, pale, bright, warm and cool as well as a great explanation of all the different color schemes. It is divided into over 20 different themes including romantic, friendly, earthy, fresh, calm, traditional, professional, magical, classic, tropical and energetic. For each of these themes a set of color schemes including monochromatic, primary, complementary, split-complementary, analogous, spilt, clash and neutral is shown. A brief tips section for using the themes in graphic design, interiors and fine art is also provided. In the back of the book there is a process color conversion chart that gives the CMYK values for each of the 106 colors used. Swatches that you can cut out are included. This is very useful for graphic designers. A very helpful and versatile CD is included with this book as well. It allows you sort by color scheme or theme. You can also pick a color and then see all the color schemes that will work with it. Each color scheme is shown in several different forms and against black, white and gray. One of a color scheme's colors can be made bigger to be used as a background to the others as well. Colors can be saved and added to custom lists and exported to popular graphics programs like Photoshop and PageMaker. The color DIC number as well as RGB and CMYK values are also given. The program does have some minor limitations. It can only search one aspect at a time. For instance you can't search for a rich theme with yellow. Also, if you search by color or color scheme you can't find out which theme set it originally belonged too. I found it a little hard to install and use at first as well. This book and Color Harmony Workbook are pretty much identical in content. However, this one is smaller and contains a CD while the other has tear-out swatches. Because I was more interested in decorating my home the workbook was more useful to me. For a web or graphic designer using computers a lot this version will probably be of more help. If I had to select only one color book, this one or Color Harmony Workbook would be my first choice.

While I found the book to be useful, especially in the 'classic' swatch sections, the 'trendy' area is a bit outdated, being it's six years old. Also, you're better off buying the version without the CD. Be cautioned, the CD is old, written for Windows 3.1 and Windows 95, uses a primitive 'drag folder onto your hard drive, click file and choose program to associate with' install procedure, and uses an included, older version of Oracle Media Objects player to run...it will not work on Windows NT 4.

There's a lot of confusion about the two versions of Color Harmony 2 because the difference seems to be the CD -- both versions credit Bride M. Whelan as author; the less expensive version doesn't come with the CD (which I haven't used). The comments on color combinations have been helpful in convincing client/coworkers -- "but this is a Professional palette!" The book's palettes can be a useful starting place. One caveat: written in 1994, the New Trends section is a bit dated, unfortunately.

Likewise in the previous review, PR's review of Spanish Language AP is far too simplisitc to adequately prepare you for the AP test. I 'felt' ready, but come test day (2004), the exam was much harder than anticipated.
Received a 4, only because of a unusally interesting essay prompt and easy speaking section.
*Didn't try any other study guide (so you may take this with a grain of salt), but felt this one didn't do the greatest job of preparation.
Purchase for basic review of verb tenses, outline of test format, mediocre coverage of listening and speaking practice.
(FYI Spanish is one of the hardest AP tests)

I bought this book thinking that it would be a valuable resource for preparing for either the AP Spanish Language or Literature exam. I was wrong.
Concerning the language exam:
First of all, there are no listening CD's and nowhere in the text does it say that a friend or someone else has to read the text. I have another testprep book without the CD's but at least it states that someone must read the listening portiong. I kept hoping to see a mail-in offer for listening CD's in the Princeton Review. There was none.
Second, the picture panels (only 2) are very illogical and nothing like a student would see on the AP exam.
Third, although it offers one practice exam, there is no indication telling me how the exam is scored.
Concerning the literature exam:
The very few test-like questions are designed for the old reading list of 5 authors. The book does not even address the fact that there is a new reading list and what exactly that reading list is.
As far as test prep books go, I'd actually give this one a zero but I was not given that opportunity. I would say that Cliffs AP or 5 Steps to a 5 or even the ARCO test prep book is much more informative. Princeton Review needs to do more than just change the "test date" on their cover.

Change: Is that a good thing, or a bad thing? That depends, says Lyle E. Schaller, on your viewpoint and values. Any given change, can be threatening if all your values are wedded to the way things are new, if you can only view the future through the lens of the past. Or it can be exciting, if your viewpoint is geared toward the new possibilities that will arise from this change. By looking at several examples of large-scale, discontinuous change that have occurred over the last ten to thirty years, Schaller prepares church leaders to orient themselves to the new challenges and opportunities for ministry that will result from the accelerated transition going on around us.

Lyle Schaller has done it once again. His knowledge and insight into contemporary American Christianity are excellent. I am not a pastor but rather a lay person involved in my church and Schaller gives me insights into the world that we all live in, not just clergy. Although many of his observations and predictions are disturbing to me - I'd rather some things were not that way - I think his astute insights accurately reflect the society we live in and the people we are. Schaller has helped me perhaps see things more as they really are instead of as I'd wish them to be; that can only help me and others who read this book work more effectively in God's church.Although not an overly long or difficult read I recommend taking this book in a slow series of smaller bites to allow one's mind to fully digest the points made within. Schaller serves up a wealth of insight in this book and, even though some points may not be what we're accustomed to tasting, they're all nourishing.

Another in a line of good books from Lyle Schaller. The book is full of his trademark questions that are designed to lead a church to transformation. Some of the findings in this book will challenge even the most reluctant to change and their world view. It is a must read for pastors of churches who are wondering what to do next. Schaller paints a picture that all of us need to see.

Schaller evaluates societal, political, and generational trends in relation to Christianity and contemporary ministry. His insights are inestimable. The wealth of information in this book is immense. Even if the reader disagrees with one or two of Schaller's numerous evaluations, theories, or predictions, the reader is still indebted to the author for sparking boatloads of novel thought. This book is best read slowly so that one's contemplative juices can churn and bubble into a rich froth. Caution: Book is Powerful!
