I am a Catholic Catechist to 6th graders who never fail to come up with, shall we say, interesting questions?! Not only does this book offer answers; it is also a treasure trove of information and little known facts that keep the kids interested.

Serious Messages Delivered in Light Style

The material in this book, the second in a series, is taken from Ask the Bible Geek, the online column by Mark Hart, a youth minister and vice president of Life Teen International. Roughly a dozen questions are presented in each of five chapters on encountering God in difficult times, during advent and Christmastime, during Lent and Easter, during ordinary time, and all the time. The two-to-three page topics are formatted with scripture passages, question, situation, and solution based on Christian teaching.

The chapter on Lent includes a question about abstaining from eating meat. Hart reviews possible explanations such as the early church's efforts to support fishermen, then shares his own preference: Jesus' offering his flesh on the cross. "When I go through the incredibly minor act of abstaining from meat on Fridays," he explains, "it is just one tiny act of self-sacrifice that points me back to that awful but Good Friday." Though Hart presents serious messages related to scripture, he favors a light style with examples geared to youth. In a reflection on playing cards with Jesus, he suggests that anyone with Jesus as a partner "can win at all of life's deals." He continues the theme, calling the serpent in the Garden of Eden a "joker (instead of the loser that he is)," who didn't know "jack" and his lies were not more than a "flush down the toilet." The devil, he writes, wants us to believe heaven "is a full house... but Jesus calls his bluff, reminding us that in His Father's house there are many rooms."

Bible Geek is a suitable resource for individual teens, youth ministers, and intergenerational faith sharing groups.

Product Description
The commentaries on the Lectionary readings in Hearing the Word of God are an attempt not only to hear the Word of God in Scripture but also to suggest ways that the Sunday readings might continue to nurture faith and life. Inevitably they reflect the time in which they were first written--as a popular weekly column in America from November 2000 to Advent 2001. Hearing the Word of God includes Scripture readings for the Sunday, followed by a reflection on the reading, and concludes with "Praying with Scripture," a series of questions and meditations to guide readers in making a personal application of the reflection.

I met Dr Megan McKenna for the first time last summer in Scotland, we spent a week working together in the house of a mutual friend.

She was preaching on Sunday and giving a workshop on one of the evenings during the week. There were three services on the Sunday an for once in my life I actually returned to hear the same sermon preached twice. What was even more impressive was she kept the congregation spellbound while she was preaching - they hung on her every word.

This is another of her works, which lets us reproduce some of her tremendous insights - if alas not her style!

This work deals with the reading for Lent it is a splendid book packed full of stimulating and thought provoking ideas for sermons. However it goes beyond that. I should also recommend it a tool for personal reflection and meditation for everyone.

If you would like to take time to meditate over the scriptures and do not know where to start this book is an excellent point of departure.

Great book for thinking young christians

Having a teenage daughter who recently made her confirmation, I revisited this book. Any intelligent, serious young person hesitates about committing themselves to their faith. Do I really believe? Does it really make sense? What about science? Why commit to a church with all the problems I see? Is this just a blind step because my parents want me too?

Lawrence Cunningham does a very good job of getting behind the "what" to the "why" and the world view of Roman Catholicism in a way that explains the beauties of the church in the world and shows why such a seemingly "unprogressive" institution can be a reasonable conscious choice for a thinking young person.

I found this book years ago when I was a new Catholic, and have given it several times as a gift to special confirmation candidates. The reading level is a step above average high school fare, as it was written for college students.
