Product Description
Transient phenomena are short-lived astronomical events, unusual in a science in which time is more often measured in millennia than milliseconds. There is a fascination with transient phenomena, predictable or otherwise, that astronomers of all abilities share. In Meteors, Comets, Supernovae, Neil Bone gives guidelines for observers, including the best possible periods (months or years) to see seasonal but unpredictable phenomena like meteors and sunspots. Recording such outbursts involves visual observing techniques, photography, and even the relatively new field of the video recording of meteors, which are also examined in detail. The book also includes material about phenomena that occur in the lower atmosphere (such as "ozone eaters", nacreous clouds, solar and lunar haloes), which although not strictly astronomical in their nature attract the attention of dedicated sky-watchers.

Product Description
With this book's uniquely practical organization by type of mechanism, you can help your students better understand and organize many reactions, and at the same time, form a more coherent picture of organic chemistry. Without going into mechanistic details and subtleties that would confuse students, Hornback uses mechanisms simply as an organizing framework. Presenting all the reactions that fall under a particular mechanism helps your students think conceptually about similarities and differences in groups of reactions and greatly enhances their ability to remember individual reactions.

This was the wrong book. I e-mailed the seller to make an exchange and I never got a reply. So I basically wasted the money spent on this book.

Hornback's organic chemistry text is by far the most concise and clear textbook I have ever used for any chemistry course in college. After introducing new concepts, ample practice problems are provided throughout the discussion to help the student stay on track and test her knowledge. The illustrations are also excellent and Hornback encourages the student to use models, which is extremely helpful in the beginning of organic chemistry.

Unlike many science textbooks that drown the reader in confusing detail, Hornback offers the perfect amount of detail in his discussions. The problems at the end of the chapters, ranging from easy-difficult are also extremely helpful to master the material.

Hornback makes an allegedly difficult subject easy to master, presenting the information in a logical manner.

An excellent introductory text

I used Hornback's 2nd edition for my introductory organic chemistry courses and found the text to be excellent, and often surpassing the in-class instruction I recieved from my professor. If you are an undergraduate student taking organic chemistry I would recommend this text above all others. I often refer to it as a reference now that I am taking advanced organic chemistry. If you read the this text, you will do well in your course regardless of the calibre of instruction you are recieving.

This is by far one of the best texts for undergraduate organic chemistry! The explanations are clear and concise, and ideas and concepts are well-organized. The book is easy to follow and the problems, both within and at the ends of the chapters, make the concepts crystal clear.

I used an earlier edition of this textbook and solutions manual when I took organic chemistry (2000-2001), and it (and some great professors) made the class easier and enjoyable. Having encountered other textbooks at other schools, I am grateful that the chemistry department at my alma mater uses this text. I am an organic chemistry TA now, and wish my students were using this book!

Bottom line, I sing the book's praises every chance I get! It's a bit expensive brand-new, but worth every penny!

A mechanistic approach to learning organic chemistry seems to make a whole lot more sense than memorizing/regurgitating the slew of reactivities available for each functional group along the way. Why then do we not have a text which allows us to do this? A few authors in the past have attempted to construct a text which views organic chemistry from a mechanistic (rather than funtional-group)standpoint, but none have been able to offer something an UNDERGRADUATE could embrace. Hornback has clearly and logically presented this often intimidating subject here, and should be praised for hurdling the barrier to offer the first readable mechanism-oriented text.

I had to buy this book for a Spectroscopy class, and I came to Amazon looking to see if there is an answer book too (which i don't think exists). Don't let the book discription fool you... The questions are "graded" meaning they progressively get more difficult. The questions are NOT answered, which would have been very helpful. If you are looking for a VERY BASIC explination to spectral chemistry, and a bunch of problems, get this book. If you want to really know what spectral chem is all about try "Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds".

An excellent beginner / intermediate reference.

Philippine Coral Reefs: A Natural History Guide is an excellent reference for beginning and intermediate marine biology enthusiasts. The author provides an in-depth discussion of the natural history, progression, species biodiversity, and inter-relationships of the coral reef ecosystem.

While it focuses largely on examples and situations found in the Philippine Archipelago, it discusses many biological concepts and processes that are common to most tropical coral reef systems.

It does all this in a language that is very straightforward and easy to understand, yet does not over-simplify highly scientific concepts. The author is an excellent communicator, in addition to being a very thorough scientist.

A significant portion of the book is dedicated to presenting the "remarkable diversity and biological interaction" of the coral reef's inhabitants. One-hundred and ninety (190) pages of the book are devoted to extensive write-ups and beautiful color photographs of numerous genera and species of flora and fauna.

The book serves as an excellent and comprehensive field guide to the coral reef system as well as a general reference on the biological processes of the coral reef ecosystem.

A definite gem of a book that I would strongly recommend to SCUBA divers, snorkellers, marine biology enthusiasts, and anyone who is interested in the beauty and science of the Coral Reef.

Product Description

Extensively revised and updated, this second edition covers the basics of the subject and the mechanisms for a wide range of chemical reactions. The text emphasises the frontier orbital theory and the use of the Hückel molecular orbitals to account for chemical reactivity. This is fully supported by references to the necessary experimental evidence, extensive data and new research methods currently in use.

For a second edition the text, figures, and tables are riddled with errors, in some sections almost a mistake a page. The text is too frequently interuppted by data, making it difficult to read.

Book was informative and there are really good execises to do to help you out.The book was in good shape when I received it, BUT someone had written and underlined quite a bit of the text in it with red ink, and had even written some notes in there. I didn't complain, because it didn't really bother me, but if you are expecting a NEW book to be delivered, you might be diassapointed!!

Great for review or clarification

This book explains everything clearly and contains lots of exercises with step-by-step solutions and chapter tests to help you fully understand pre-algebra. Don't buy this book and introductory algebra however, because the material in this book is adequately covered in the first few chapters of Introductory Algebra.
