Good book about a dull region

Southern California is popular with coastal kayakers only because a lot of kayakers live here. In reality, the coast is a pretty dull, straight-line affair, pounded by surf that makes it difficult to paddle too close to shore. (I prefer the craggy coastlines of New England or the Pacific Northwest.) The tours in this book explore some of the few protected bays and some places on the open ocean where you can get in and out of the surf safely. It is probably the best book on the region, but don't make a special trip here on account of it.

An Absolute Must for any California Kayaker!

I not only bought this book for myself, but now I'm ordering one to give as a gift. I like the way it clearly divides the major kayaking regions of the great Republic of California geographically and how each section--again very clearly--lists the tour's skill level, trip length, a map, a summary, hazards, and very often historical and other trival which can really add magic to a trip. But shame on the author for not mentioning the largest inland body in all of California which is now highly threatened and draws literally millions of spectacular migrating birds daily in the winter (if YOU don't know what it is, shame on you!). BTW, the State Park ranger there hosts free kayaking tours (kayaks included) in the winter; the winds cause waves (yes, waves in an inland SEA--hint, hint) can be lethal other times, esp. fall. There are very cool places in my area that were not mentioned (I guess they'll remain my little secret-hahaha)and since the book is a little old now, a few things have changed, but otherwise, this book is a real gem!

This book is useful and a pleasure to read.

Adventure Kayaking is a clear, well-written and enjoyable book on kayaking for the beginner, or advanced kayaker. The personal narratives helped me to "get inside" the experiences the author was having on his adventures. I thought that the maps, trip discriptions and photographs worked very well together and would truly assist me in having my own kayak adventures.

Useful to a point

This is a good pocket guide with accurate and useful maps. However, it's not really in the Lonely Planet mold, not being oriented towards independent and low-cost travel. It doesn't even list hostels in its accomodation section.

I didn't get any book (it should have arrived about 20 days ago!). Amazon got already my money and it seems very hard to get it back. This was the first time I used Amazon. That would be the last too!!!

This book is small and thin enough to fit in a purse or a jacket pocket. It has all the information on tourist sites, museums, restaurants, hotels, shopping, nightlife, and "getting around" that you could possibly need. The book includes several maps of Lisbon, including a subway map.

Lonely Planet's "Best of Lisbon" was the only travel guide that my wife and I brought with us on our recent trip to Lisbon and we were very happy with it.

Great for Women going to Dubai

Not know much about Dubai when I was first asked to go, I learned a great deal from this book. I learn about different areas, where to go and what the culture was like. Specificly I found the section on "women traveling to Dubai" very helpful. It pointed out how to expect to be treated when going out to eat, what to wear, and where to stay.
I highly recommand this book and even more so if you're a woman.

LP hits another grand slam. I have not bought one LP that wasn't great. I own about 12.

Keep up the good work.

This one has alot of great information on this amazing city. The maps are a little dated, but what can you expect when youa re mapping the fastest growing city in the world.

Believe the hype!

My '5 stars' are for Dubai. I'm one of the authors and lived in the UAE for almost 8 years. I guess we do believe the hype, because we've lived it. Dubai is an extraordinary city, the country offers one of the best lifestyles in the world, and the Emirati people - Dubai locals in particular - are incredibly dynamic, funny, laidback, hospitable and tolerant. Having travelled all over the world (to over 50 countries) and recently moved to Europe, Dubai remains one of my favorite cities.
I'd rather not risk repeating what's in our books, but it's true that Dubai has glorious year-round weather (if you like it hot), access to some truly spectactular desert and mountain scenery, some of the world's best shopping (souqs, malls and a growing number of independent stores), restaurants, bars and hotels (and I'm not referring to Burj Al Arab), and a culture that is comprised of both the local and traditional, contemporary and multicultural, that is hybrid and mobile, fresh and alive. Unfortunately, however, we've been just as guilty as the next writers in focussing too much on the city's sun, sand and shopping. Fed up with people criticising the city as being souless (which we know it isn't) and without culture (which we know it has - many complex layers of local, regional and world cultures, in addition to a growing and buzzy arts scene) - in our update of this guide, we try to introduce people to the 'real Dubai' and 'backstreet Dubai' via boxed texts and walking tours that will take visitors off the beaten track. We're hoping these will guide travellers to get beyond the hype and experience more than the beach, desert safaris and malls, and taste a little of the real Dubai - the Dubai that keeps many expatriates in the city so long, and lures vistors back to the city time and time again.

Mediocre

Of all the LP books I've read (probably 30 or 40), this is my least favorite. The authors seem to be working way too hard to sound hip and cool and impress their readers to produce an interesting book for travel addicts. Perhaps they've just been into Dubai a bit too long and have bought into the hype...

Useless
Rating (1)
Date: 2008-02-16

Compared to the Rough Guide, Moon Guide and online information, this guide will be useful as a coaster but not much more. I agree with Kelly that it's ridiculously out of date - and I mean *years* - and in a dynamic city that's just not going to work for a travel guide.

** UPDATE **

I was using it as a coaster and the cover glued itself to my coffee cup. Therefore, it's also useless as a coaster! Argh!

good summary, but disappointing details

This can give you a good summary of Sydney, but I've found many details to be out of date. Two restarants I wanted to go to, the hotel concierge has never even heard of and I couldn't find them on the web. then, I wanted to go to a store they recommend, but it is not there. How old is this book anyway???
